Wait someone tell me if this is inception in Avengers it mentions legolas but if a lord of the rings character is mentioned then how is Elrond Elrond when he is red skull? (Or Stark could have just meant the books)

Well, Elrond and Red Skull are two different characters played by same actor, however since you can say the actors doesn't exist in Marvel UNiverse, but are replaced by their roles Tony could refrence to the movie.
Also Tony probaly never have seen Red Skull.

That reminds me of a scene in Deep Space Nine:
Ezri (dressed as a waitress) offers the guard a specially-prepared martini. Once he drinks it, he'll run to the bathroom, puking his guts out, and they'll be free to steal what's inside the safe.
Guard: (barely acknowledging her) Nah, I'm not thirsty.
Ezri: Can I have it then? I've been working all day, and I'm sooo tired.
*Guard makes a big show of drinking the martini anyway just so Ezri can't have it*
