Navi can be the key item. There's no compass because there is no treasure whatsoever. Everything is the dungeon map because there is no dungeon and that's all there is XD

NONONO bad guys put this spell on Link, and it's all a dream. The little kids that Link saved have to go on a huge adventure through space time to wake him up so he can save the day! It can be, like... a whole new Zelda game! Legend of Zelda: The Erased Dimension! All the while, Link must complete insane dungeons such as this one for Midna! Now THAT'S complicated!

BUT WAIT!!! Would the player be controlling Link or the Ordon kids? It would be unlike Zelda if you controlled another character for more than a little while.
And why would the kids have to go save Link for him to save the day? If they go through all that trouble shouldn't they just do it themselves? I'm poking holes in perfection! NOOOES!!!

No, the little kids would be doing things on their own, and you'd just see wierd stuff happening in your dimension that they were causing to help you (only you don't know it's them). Link can't save the day from the dream dimension because the bad guys are in the real one.
