ARGH! at last I have something of this that I feel comfortable of uploading....My other attempt is in my scraps... of which I plan to redo after I practice drawing rocks and such...
I really need to improve my skills on backgrounds...
So I kept with a simple one whilst I do so

I'll leave the tip here instead of on the forums.
The reason you were seeing in the scrapped version the subject separated from the background is because the subject doesn't have any of the of the surrounding environment colors in it.
As others have said, you need to plan the whole thing from the getgo. Think in terms of what environment your subject may want to be in instead of thinking of BG as some secondary, annoying thing that goes after the main focus.
This picture works because the subject has colors of the environment in it.

Griffins are on of the coolest fantasy creatures that haven't gotten as much attention as dragons, elves and such. It's a pity, but there are also benefits in that.

Well, the benefits are that it's easier to take a fresh look on them. They are so old and yet haven't had such a fad on them yet as wizards or vampires, so they arent "spent" subject yet. Centaurs are rather rare too. Sort of cliches unused for so long that they have started recovery. (I have both in my story

Yeah. They are tricky characters too, since they are so clearly inhuman, yet not as supernatural as dragons. In my story, they are sentient species on par with humans on inteligence but obviously more wild and bestial, like not building houses or tools for themselves, but still capable of mixing in and cooperating with other races should they choose so.
Other races are various humans, centaurs as I mentioned, and "glowing ones" which are sort of my twist of elves, since I'm so tired of the stereotypes. They are tall and "perfect looking" people, but have a lifespan of "only" a thousand years at most. Then to seperate them from elves more, they are not such treehuggers nor fancypants as some woodelves. They are rather cold, logical, rely more on straightforward strenght and their worlds standard of machinery and mechanics in combat (crossbows etc), but are generaly as friendly as humans. I mean that they aren't any perfect warriors of light and and nature, but not some dark lords either. At least not all of them, one or the other.
As for "pure evil" creatures, there are "the lifeless" mostly gargoyles and some other old beings that look like skeletons and are driven forward by some "inconceivable evil will" as they put it. There are other kinds of too, but they are more or less rare or unique. Their true nature and origin will be revealed during the story tho.

woah! o.o sounds amazing!! I hate the fact that creatures are all the same like vampires in one book are no different to another...
my best friend is the granddaughter of the guy who wrote Dracula... just thought id fit that in XD
In my book... all the creatures are made up.... not even existent in the fantasy world X3 so i'm not struggling toooo much in making them different haha
they have no powers as such..... very simple ones that arent that strong....
theyre not really the main focus of the story... but I love fantasy and creatures so I had to add them in somewhere

Nice! I guess it might be fun being related to someone that famous. But not too close to be actually compared to him/her though.
I suppose self made are always best, since there's guarantee of originality, but if you manage to fine-tune existing ideas well enoungh, it's almost as good as original
What kind of creatures are they then?

I don't really have names for them... but one is a mixture of wolf, owl, horse, cheetah and frog XD
another is a monkey-lion
and another is a black tiger with golden or orange stripes

Whoa: you have to describe that wolf-owl-horse-cheetah-frog more closely 
Also monkey lion would propably be a very mindblowing encounter. They aren't mean are they?

the monkey lion is sneakier than a normal lion and less aggressive.. and can change from being small to very big
