In the times of old, when Balrogs operated IN SQUADS...

HOLY COW...

I've been looking for a good design for Gothmog, and I think I just found it....

He looks like the Giga-Bowser of Balrogs....he looks GREAT....but where is his whip??? <

Ah, well, fave, anyway....

did he have one? I guess so, a whip and an ax, that would make sense. He needs more clothes, I still like the idea of Balrogs being intelligent and covering themselves with armour and sigils and stuff like that. But its a start! Balrogy-type demons come easy, I find, and that is excellent for practicing tablet skills!

Well, are clothes a mark of intelligence or modesty?

Personally, I don't get the impression of Balrogs being modest....they might prefer to fight in their full naked glory. Show their pure forms, the bodies designed by Melkor, terror embodied....

Okay, enough gloating.

Yeah, all the Balrogs have whips....maybe his is stored somewhere.

I'll re do him. This pic has a lot of animal rage to it, as opposed to the gloating arrogance I always imagined balrogs having. You'd have to take pleasure in smashing and domination if you were that big, and sentient.
I love the ideas of balrogs being sentient, makes them so much more...I dunno. Villaneous. Smaug is Smaug because he's an arrogant prick, not just because he's a dragon, and I think the same mentality fits a balrog quite nicely. Less so with riddles, moreso with torture.

Indeed!

Balrogs are servants of Melkor, evil fiends...bestial, yes, but something with a whip has to be sadistic.

That is some intensely cool and detailed lineart.
I'm partial to his shredded wings, and is that a Cluthulu axe? That is too much!
His spines and quills rock too!

I was listening to old metallica while drawing him, and Kirk Hammett's obsession with Cluthulu rubbed off on me!
Thanks man, this was me and my tablet falling in love with each other.

TABLET, jesus christ, I can't imagine doing anything by tablet, the cursor goes off screen and what not at times, and I zoom in for detail and it goes all disproportioned!
Makes it even more impressive now!
I think it might be the fact I've never paid over 20 quid for a tablet though! XD
I SO need a wacom...

Noticed that. Also incidently looks like a Balor form D&D. Or rather, a Balor with spikes.
