What would be suitable weapons for mermaids? I'm leaning to polearms like a trident or spear. Because what better way to enforce social distancing rules (I swear to gods this joke better not last the whole year)

I like the idea of swords and guns, but neither seem very practical underwater. Guns, as we've discussed, are probably good for one shot (unless you can contain the powder and such underwater) and would have to have a very powerful charge to be any good over more than a few feet. Swords need a lot of movement, and while they would likely slice through the water pretty well, would also require a lot of muscle to properly strike.
Most often, I see tridents, spears, harpoons, thrust weapons are good - I've heard of a few artists using halberds also, though the axe part would likely be decorative.
Bashing weapons like maces would probably work well too, provided the user has swinging distance. Also, javelin seems like a good one, again, so long as the projectile has enough heft to keep its momentum in combat. Of course, all of these would probably work better at shallower depths.
I gave a mermaid a crossbow once, but she fired it out of the water.

Heavy large bladed halberds would probably be a bit cumbersome, something like a simple spear like the Chinese halberd (戟) might be better suited. I've seen some interpretations of what such weapons would look like based on materials available to mermaids, including attaching giant crab/lobster claws to the tips of such spears like a halberd or making use of fish bones to make quite spiky stuff like a mace or an axe.
Bow and arrow weapons always seemed an odd choice of weapon for mers, only ever useful above water such as the case of Nagas in Warcraft and other similar fantasy settings.
A crossbow is an uncommon and interesting choice for mers to use, though that always seemed to require a level of expertise to develop and still limited in range compared to a standard bow. But that's essentially like a speargun then.

This is so awesome! I saw the Instragram version earlier, but now seeing the full version, it looks even more amazing! You are such a talented artist. One of the cool things I like about your mermaids is how realistic and detailed they are, especially their tail fins. If you ever have time or want to add the other amazon mermaids or background, I will pay for it. Thanks again for drawing this.
BTW: The eBook is called Wonder Woman: Mermaid of Paradise Island. You may need a kindle or the kindle app to purchase it:

It is drawn by Josh Hood:

You are most welcome! This was an interesting one to do, trying to find a pose that I liked and deciding which version of her costume to go for.
I hope I was able to capture her tough warrior physique to balance with her generous bust ୧༼✿ ͡◕ д ◕͡ ༽୨ plus her mermaid tail was quite a challenge to do since I wasn't sure what style to draw them but settled on this one.
As for adding a background and some Amazonian mermaids I will consider it after the end of MerMay, got a bunch of others to work on in the meantime but that's certainly a cool idea I'd like to realize. ( •⌄• ू )✧
Yes! I was aware of the cool piece done by Josh Hood as a glimpse into the book, sadly I don't have a Kindle nor does it seem I am able to purchase it as it doesn't seem available. If only there are some other ways...
