Description

Emma was not at all happy about what she was hearing on the other end of this phone call. She had expected a reprieve from the rural doldrums she found herself trapped in, but it sounded like it was not to be, far from it in fact. Prior to about a year ago, Emma had been living it up in the big city, having a grand old time. Fancy parties, sophisticated friends, the whole nine yards. The company she worked for, Black Gold Minerals was making money hand over fist. Then after a combination of new regulations, manpower shortages and a couple bad investments the company was near bankruptcy. They needed a big win to stay in business and turned to a whale of a deal they had never quite been able to close.

That's where Emma came in. The whale in question was an elderly man named McIntyre. He owned a huge plot of virgin land which had never been tapped, but surveys showed there was an abundance of minerals beneath his soil. Many attempts to buy his land or obtain the mineral rights had been made over the years, but all had failed. If Emma could manage to secure these rights, her company would make a killing and naturally she would be well rewarded. Never one to back down from a challenge Emma accepted.

To get close to McIntyre she assumed an air tight fake identity the company managed to fabricate and took a job as his housekeeper. Then for the next twelve grueling months, she kept house, gardened and feigned interest in the old man's boring stories in an attempt to gently coerce him into giving them what they wanted. It wasn't easy, Emma was more accustomed to being cared for then caring for others. She thought cleaning and looking after the old man was beneath someone like her, with her multiple degrees and beauty, but she could hardly turn her nose up at what her company had offered her. It was the brass ring.

And the whole plot seemed to be working. McIntyre came to depend on Emma for everything and came to think of her like the daughter he never had. She was just about to broach the subject of the mineral rights with him when she got the call from her company's lead counsel. Apparently his cook had been arrested for elder abuse and attempting to exert undue influence on another wealthy senior for whom she worked. Because of this the authorities were extra concerned about at all of her clients, which of course included McIntyre. The company attorney cautioned Emma against pursuing acquiring anything from McIntyre. Emma suggested she just drop it and head back to headquarters, but to her dismay she was told this was unwise, this would just draw even more attention to her. It was best if she just stayed where she for a while, under her assumed identity as a high school drop out and housekeeper. Maybe another year or so. This meant that it was another year as Emma the housekeeper or as many as 5 years in prison. Either way, the company would be destroying all records of her employment with them. What would she do he asked? Despite the very serious threat of prison, Emma still found weighing the two options surprisingly difficult.
