Description

Where the touch of the lover ends
And the soul of the friend begins
There's a need to be separate
And a need to be one
A struggle neither wins
You gave me the world I was in
And a place I could make a stand
I could never see how you doubted me
When I'd let go of your hand
I must have thought that I would know
If things were going to end
And the heavens were rolling
Like a wheel on a track
And our sky was unfolding
And it'll never fold back
  Sky blue and black
And I'd have fought the world for you
If I thought that you wanted me to
Or put aside what was true or untrue
If I'd known that's what you needed
What you needed me to do
But the moment has passed by me now
To have put away my pride
And just come through for you somehow

If you ever need holding
Call my name, I'll be there
If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through
You're the color of the sky
Reflected in each store-front window pane
If you ever need holding
Call my name, I'll be there
If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through

—Jackson Browne

One of the comments you often see around here is: "Oh, I thought it was a photograph" And often enough this reflects admirable technical skills, but sadly lacking artistic vision.

Your endeavor to create the perfect film-less portrait photograph has found it's culmination in this one (for now, I expect still more to come). This is not only "just like a photograph", but a real portrait, not merely a depiction or a likeness but alive, in the sense that it evokes emotion in the spectator.

You have achieved true mastery my friend!

"I expect still more to come .."

Well .. I have not been living up to these expectations much this year. Not a great deal of time or mental illumination for the task I'm afraid.  But, as it is with creative works, what we have .. we have.  There's always a historical body of work to re-visit and enjoy; although sometimes we may find it hard to recall ever being in the space which generated particular works.  Strange experience!

It is good to see your words here, Marcel.
I would apologize for the great length of time in my responding if there were any fault behind my absence.
Just the way life has been rolling in my days this year, nothing more or less to my distance from these galleries.

I wish the best of what you wish for yourself in the days and weeks ahead, good friend!

Cheers!

thank you very much, much appreciated on the compliment on my gallery.

that being said, after you have had your large cup of coffee and have a moment, I would like to expand a bit on my simple one word compliment on this peice.

I am not into the 3d art, not really. By my first glance, I would never have thought this to be that type of artwork. I read your description and the credits, and went to the other pages, still cannot beleiving it was in fact 3d art.

it looks so real and life like that at first I had thought you catagorized it incorrectly as it looked like a beautiful well rendered drawing. the eyes in this are simply amazing, and the lighting is gorgeous with just the right amount of emphasis on the key parts.

It is a beautiful peice, whatever and how many formats you used to get to this point is mute as far as I am concerned, as the finished product is simply in a word other than stunning, amazing.

Enjoy your coffee my friend and I will be sure to watch you and wonderful artworks in the future

First, know that "stunning" works for me.  If one of these portraits draws you into this little gallery, holds your attention and moves you enough to take the time to express an impression .. that in itself speaks volumes to one who is listening.

That being set down .. the description of your experience with this portrait raised several smiles on my face.  The largest rabbit that I chase through this medium is the illusion of camera independent photographs. I have written about this quest many times along these lines:

"What I set out to do is create an image that looks like a portrait created on photographic film.  I have always been fascinated by close-up portraits of the human face; they radiate an enchantment over me.  This is particularly true of photographs a century or more old.  A life passed on many years ago looks out across time at us from a aged print with a vitality that is sometimes stunning and nearly always intriguing.

This curious magic of living spirit within an image is what I tend to go for when crafting a portrait with digital tools.  The challenge is set in the question: 'Can we infuse mere pixels with an authentic sense of life soul?'  We each know it can be done .. we have seen such portraits from time to time.  If I am creatively fortunate in my quest, we shall see some more."

That's about it really.  Except that most of the more 'lively' portraits you find posted here were crafted somewhere within a sleepless night or two.  In fact tonight was one of those nights .. and there's another spirited portrayal in the final stages of Post right now.

As for the formats used, I'm not very orthodox about crafting .. no matter what medium I follow to express something.  To the 'Tools of the Trade' question in the profile here I answered: "Most any tool I can hope to master that will help get impressions and intentions out of my head."

Thank you, Jenn, for sharing your experience and impressions!  It matters to me.

With warmth,

Terry

it must be extremely rewarding to see art through your eyes, to get the right dimensions, proportions, lighting, to be able to see and comprehend all of the details formed in order to create something so lively and full of personality. to hear/read you explain it is an art in itself.

Apologies for the immense delay in responding, Jenn!
No reflection upon you at all, merely my own absence from tending to my gallery while occupied elsewhere on site these past two months.

Thank you for this warm expression!...  it is significant to me.

It is natural to experience a yearning to share what pleases our senses and/or what we come to value in the world.  Realizing this sharing is not always so easy.

Giving form to internal vision is the eternal challenge to anyone pursuing creative expression.  "How to show what we see?"  If we stay at this endeavor long enough the frustration of wrestling with our limitations builds up a well of emotional material that with patience shines through our craft, whatever medium we employ.

With my preferred subject, the human face, the viewer is always close in .. so whatever I invest emotionally is going to be 'right there' to be seen .. particularly through the eyes of of each portrait.

"Rewarding" ?... I don't know.  Many times a finished portrayal will open up other questions and new landscapes to be explored.  As it is with many creative folks, sometimes I would stop a while, as if satisfied ... yet one is not true and the other is not possible.

  So we continue.

With warm regard,

Terry

The main problem with the most 3D renders (if not 'every') is that the eyes do not convey 'anything', they are just empty glass vessels.. You Terry, have that special ability to fill those vessels with real human emotion. INHO 'that' is the secret to your success.

You know I love your work dear friend, I do not have to tell you this, you *know* I do..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tea-Rex In reply to LotteHerSecrets [2013-01-30 22:12:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes .. I know very well, dear, Charley!
Ours is rare and mutual adoration which ever inspires the other in a regenerative creative loop.  We love what we love .. without apology and with a deep passion. This .. as we turn towards four years together.

This 'secret to my success' is no secret it seems.  It is the quality most noted by those who see.  And there it is revealed in my own words out on the main page of the gal' here:

"What attracts me to working with 3D are the human reflections which occasionally project from somewhere below an image surface.  Most times a render looks like what it is, a posed doll.  'Can we do something more with this medium?' is a question that started teasing me several years ago, eventually leading me to begin experiments in creating photographs without a camera."

But I am not alone in crafting life into mere pixels, am I?  It's time for a new journal article, I think, which highlights the portrayals of others in this medium which inspire my own craft.  I won't need to look far for fine examples.

Yes .. this I will do.

She's a beauty .. your Neve .. a ravisher of the senses.

Thank you, Thomas!

"... that's probably just me, Who I am."

More than likely .. it's both of us.

From the first time you stopped by and shared your impressions, with the Forest Nymph, you have recognized aspects of the characters in these portraits which I intended them to emote.  Not all viewers see such nuances .. not by far.

When we are honest about our explorations on-line and in the world at large .. we will admit that we are ever looking for ourselves .. or, at least, aspect reflections of our selves.  There is nothing wrong with this.  Art, if it works at all, does so along the avenues of connection between creator and viewer.  All life is a grander experience when such connections are made.

Is Neve sad?  Not inherently, no.  Just look at her here:  [link]   We all have our 'moments'.. this is certainly one of Neve's .. somewhere in time.

Until the next, my friend . . .

Yes .. Charlie & Neve are quite different from other ladies marketed as dual packages.  They are not different aspects of the same character; they are different characters with reflective sympathies.  In this manner they are akin to their creators/alter egos.  & Both enchantingly beautiful.

My taste in and for coffee is widely known throughout the kingdom.  For three and a half years I have often mentioned that these portraits are near to all crafted within my 'coffee hours' as an indulgence of R&R from my full days and nights of production.

Now if I ask: 'Of all those who know my tastes .. how many possess an intuitive manner of appearing at my door just as the water is brewing up or as I am about to plunge the French Press; to share in these magical hours?'  I believe you would be wise enough to answer correctly.

It is never what we know in life that holds value; it is only ever what we do with what we know and how we employ that knowledge into the few hours which are ours to spend as we choose.  This is always the heart measure of friendship and affection.

I am .. as ever I have been .. dear Charley.

Excellent image Terry ... I really love the low light Tri-X effect. And then there's Jackson Browne ... just as I'm inclined to make that leap into the abyss of bottomless cynicism my skeptical nature enjoys momentary restraint. Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you, kindly, Gene!
This one is for the circle of ex-photographers ( if one can ever really leave this medium behind ) that have gathered to my side out here through these portraits.  As one such, your words go straight to heart.

It is indeed Tri-X I was resurrecting here; 'pushed' by hand to 1600 as I learned to do in my own darkroom from the age of 12 on.  Natural light was always more 'true' to my eyes than flash-craft .. and NL could always be created by cooking Tri-X.

Many folks today actually 'hate' grain in photographs.  My eyes turn cold to the 'un-real' sharpness of digital photographs.  The Human eye does not see this way .. machines do.  Part of the charm in my attraction to this medium is how one can use the technology itself to re-generate visions of analog days.

What's that you said about cynicism?!...

You know me well enough, Brother .. there never is one of these portraits without some song or other wrapped up with its inception.  What's wonderful about Jackson is he began his carreer as a cynic .. a orthodox one.  Through all these years .. decades .. he has retained both his humor and romantic heart as he continues to point up the untollerables and political injustices outside personal interest for the awards or the 'bling'.  To see him perform today is to enjoy the company of a youthful heart with a sincere graciousness for the support of his audience.

There was a vibrant and healthy tribe of songwriters when you and I were yet out riding the rails, four sheets to wind, who wrote lyrics and sang from a heart of humorous cynicism .. simply for the love of it.  Jackson was there, and with him, Waits, Henley, Croce, Taylor, Young, S&G, Stevens, Chapin and others.  It was span of years in which one song, one legend of a song, became and remained identified with the everlasting yearning for a time when music was the fire which inspired and united us all; Mclean's American Pie. [link]

It takes hundreds of listenings to unravel the cultural touchstones woven into that masterwork of lyricism.  It was always good fun to puzzle out all the references .. and folks still do.  Within those many lines we find the ultimate cynic laughing from the murder at Altamonte all the way back to the crash that stole away Holly & Valens.

And as the flames climbed high into the night
    To light that sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
    The day the music died

Nothing is ever really lost .. until we let it be so.  New life will always conquer death.  But sometimes we do need new reminders.  When I look into Neve's eyes above, now that the night of her creation has passed, I am re-minded of what we have lost .. but may yet find again
