Description This series of photos are from June 7th's [2009]
PRIDE in Santa Cruz, California. I attended it with my friend Laura ~LauraLeePhotography

It was my first official freelance event project as Tea Photography. It was a MOST wonderful experience to say the least! I met another photographer, and exchanged info. and business cards with her, which was very cool. More so, I felt quite successful, with the event, for a couple reasons- the exposure and contacts were better than I thought it was going to be!

Special Note: I am uploading these for Photographical Reasons, as well as for possible Photographers' Interests in work, ideas for types of places to practice, and gain experience. THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THESE PHOTOS a.k.a THIS PHOTOGRAPHED EVENT IS NOT UP FOR DEBATE- NEGATIVE OR DEROGATORY STATEMENTS OF ANY SORT.
Thank you for understanding.

**************************

For me, this is my personal favourite, of the three band photos, that I chose to upload. This tuba player was awesome! He had a sweet and friendly demeanor, and I got a good feeling about him, like he was truly a kind soul. Sometimes that happens.

I just took part in a TubaChristmas last night. I've been doing them for the last four years and I see a lot of guys like this!

Nice shot! You can't play a tuba (OK, I know it's a sousaphone!) and be sad.

Thanks for your comment!
You are right, it's a sousaphone, that's cool you know that.

That's neat you can play one, and that you enjoy it so much!

I play clarinet, piano, marimbas, drums, and a little bit of guitar.

Music rocks!

I play several instruments too, but now spend most of my time strumming an ukulele.

Aren't tubas/sousaphones just great? It's like they are the backbones of the band, and usually people don't realize it? The secret to what really give the band its true fullness and grandeur!

Brass instruments really are awesome!

My dad's best instrument [and I say it that way, because he could play all of them, since he was a band teacher] was the trombone, and he was awesome!

And my brother played the trumpet!! He was a natural. Always impressed everyone.

Not me, I played the clarinet, a woodwind or reed. BUT, I always wanted to play the saxophone! A LOT of people THINK that's a brass instrument because of the colour... however, it is also a woodwind or reed instrument!

Sousaphones rule. May be playing one next year for my school's marching band...I need to grow some though. x3

TeaPhotography In reply to flyazneagle [2009-08-22 17:41:22 +0000 UTC]

Don't they, though? I always just loved them in band.

That's sooooo awesome that you may be playing them for marching band next year!

Have you played it for concert yet? [A little easier to handle sitting down... ]

But yes, you're right about needing to growing into a bit... this guy here has been "grown into it" for several years by now, I bet.

I remember for marching band, they wondered/hoped I might be okay for the bass drum... but while tall, I was too sinewy and thin, ESPECIALLY at the small of my back where you need the most support for a bass drum, I about died carrying the bass drum, and even the marimbas for marching band!

My clarinet was a lot easier.

My best to you in band next year! Have fun, I always loved it, but it was also always A LOT of work, not just musically, but we competed ALL THE TIME, marching, concert, field, jazz, AND percussion.

I play the tuba in marching band. We only have one sousaphone.
And I'm kind of scrawny and I have bony shoulders. So I dunno x] 5'6" and 130 lbs. Probably not the best. lol

And I feel sorry for the bass drummers. It does look heavy. I know a flute player who switched for this year. I wonder if she regrets it xD

And thanks very much. ^^ This coming year I'll be a junior so I know what its like. Loads of fun though; and in the end its all worth it. We made 4th in North East regionals last year, USSBA. Hoping we can do it all over again.

Actually, I always get a bit confused... the difference between sousaphone and tuba, for all my band experience and my dad having been a band teacher for a living for 35 years.

What is pictured here in my photo?

I know what you mean... In high school I was nearly 5'9" [same as now] and appeared I might be able to handle it, but weighed as you, which was awful for my back, I didn't have muscle, really.

It was my Junior year as well, that I "mixed it up" -- but ya know, hey, no regrets, it's always a good experience to expand your horizons when it comes to trying new things that broaden your horizons in positive educational matters!

I mean, I tried the bass drum in one competition parade, and I spoke up that it messed up my back muscularly for about a week, and that was that. I only did it for concert band a few times. I really liked marimbas best, for percussion. Fun stuff.

Anyway... it IS fun, and it IS worth it, you are so right, looking waaaaay back on it,
I believe it even more so, and so will you.

The learning experiences from participating in all that band stuff in high school, are really very well-rounding for a life time for an individual.

Hey, that's great about the 4th place!
Placing is a great and fun feeling. Band competitions are a unique form of camaraderie, I feel.

I came from a rather large high school known for frequent wins. But we were working round the clock... 5am at the school, to start the day with band, and until 5pm. Sheesh.
[ oh, wellll, yeah we had our other classes in between, including a band class. ]

I hope you CAN do it all over again! Much success to you AND your band, I can't say enough how great I think this is for you. And above all else, the music part of it all, is truly the most important.
Have fun, and enjoy the time while you are currently participating in it all...

and some day... you'll have some cool memories to look back on.

It's been cool chatting you.

Its a sousaphone, it wraps around. A tuba is like what's used in concert band, which sits on the players knee or lap. Similar to a contrabass, though those use a modified mouthpiece set up designed to be carried on the shoulder.

And ouch. x.x I've played baritone in marching band for the past two years and going on a third. Senior year maybe? lol

And thanks very much, I appreciate it. =]]

Okay, tuba concert band and sousaphone for marching- I think I'll correct this, thank you very much!

Baritones can be a real bear to march with, too. Yikes!

Have fun with school starting again and playing music!

Oh and you're welcome, it's been fun for me too.
