Description I made this piece to promote the artwork of Shepard Fairey. Only recently I've gotten really into his styles and pieces and I realized the uniqueness in his street art. He definitely inspired me to continue doing digital art !

And I wanted to make this also because I haven't seen much artwork that tributes to the man himself, so I wanted to "attempt" hahaah to use his styles in this piece and promote the OBEY Giant movement !

Nice work. Shepard was my "gateway" to street art about 12 or so years ago. Glad he got you into street art as well. Peace!

He gets a lot of hate from people right now because he blew up, but I suspect it is more jealousy than anything. I miss the days of him doing all of the Obey product himself by hand, but he has been able to accomplish so much more with a crew of people. I still say it is what "brought me to the dance" when it comes to loving street art.

On a side note, I met him & his wife about 7 or 8 years ago in Austin, TX, & they were some of the nicest, most genuine people you could meet. They were busy as hell, but took like 45 minutes to just sit & chat, even when we were giving them an out to take off. They were like "Nah, it's cool, we're not that busy". My buddy also gave him one of 3 prints that exist of an image that my friend took of a series of wheatpastes that Shepard had put up the year before. [link] My buddy has one, I have one, & Fairey has one. I even have the wheatpaste that he put up (the middle one in the pic) still at my house. [link]

Ya, I noticed that myself. I seen some people against his work because of bunch or random crap, but over I respect him a lot! He's work is amazing and its so different from any other street artist. And I love the OBEY logo, its so powerful and simple! Ahhhh this guy is a genius to me!

Ahhhh that is AWESOME! You and your wife are so lucky XD! I wouldn't be surprised about them being busy, mostly now how OBEY is so well-known. But ya, I can definitely see him being really down to Earth guy, I seen some interviews of him on YouTube, and the guys is just awesome XD! Those links are awesome btwwww!

The real test is whether or not anyone who is interested in this type of work recognizes the iconography. The answer is that ANYONE who is into street art knows his work. There are only a handful of people with "instantly recognizable" styles to a huge chunk of the population, & I have yet to hear anyone on Shep's level of fame talk smack about him. It's always people who nobody has heard of whining about how he sucks.

Meeting him was definitely cool, although it was a friend & me, not my wife.

The real thing I took away from the experience was how someone who didn't "owe" it to me sat there & was the realest cat I could meet. Definitely stuck in my head as the right way to deal with people.

Another artist who was like that was Ron English. The guy sells paintings for tens of thousands of dollars (or more for some) & he was ridiculously down to Earth. I talked to him for about an hour last year, & he was even scheduled to be at a party to promote his work during the time. I said to him to split & get to his gig, but he told his assistants "They can wait. I'm talking to this guy now". I was pretty blown away by that.

Mmmmhmmm completely agreed. I've only known a few famous streets artist (Banksy, Dolk, Fairey, etc.) but other then that, I can't really tell a difference between a artist's stencil from another. Hahahah indeed XD!

Ahhh that's awesome, ya I recently watched some more interviews and his influences and he seems so chill! Again, your hella lucky to even to meet up him XD!

I never heard him, but I just checked out some of his artwork a few minutes ago. I'll admit, a unique style,a lot of his pieces are ironic (which is AWESOME XD) like this one [link] , but they're kinda trippy and creepy in a way, but I LIKE ! Hahahha that's legit XD! How did you get the opportunities to meet these artists??? Just right place at the right time?

Just to give you a quick primer, check out these guys/girls when you get the chance:
c215, Swoon, Orticanoodles, Mittenimwald, El Mac & Herakut when you get the chance. Just a few names that you should know. Great work from all.

English is awesome too. One of my favorite things about him is that he takes some of the money he makes from his "legit" work & turns it into elaborate street work. He regularly hijacks billboards & modifies them to have an anti-message from its original intent. That McDonald's campaign was sick as hell too.

As far as how I met them, I just knew that both of them would be around the area on the days when I met them. Just a matter of approaching them. They were both very easy going.

Peace!

Indeed. Usually they end up coming to SXSW in Austin (music festival in March). Hopefully someone else cool will be this year.
