At first, you see a busy thoroughfare. Cars whiz by and inclement weather prevails
A frail old woman, not even covered by a coat, considers crossing the street. The snow covers her glasses, blinding her. She wipes them off, only to find them covered again almost instantly. Just as she moves to step off the sidewalk, a handsome elderly gentleman approaches. He offers the woman his jacket, and prepares to guide her across the street. As he does so, the weather begins to clear and the traffic dissipates.
Enter Floovy. Floovy looks to be a fun-loving giraffe, who is loose on the same street as our would-be pedestrians. Floovy runs up behind the couple, and tramples them both to death indiscriminately. The film cuts to credits. Welcome to Titmouse’s 5 Second Night.
The films that screened earlier this year at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood were the result of a day (or in some cases, days) of work by Titmouse animators. Each year the company challenges its staff to create their own short films, working as individuals or as a team. You can read more about the process here .
Many of the films are based in humor, and they don’t shy away from shock-value.
But it isn’t all giraffes trampling senior citizens; the films range in tone, theme, animation style, and content. Some are abstract, weird, and beautiful, featuring unknown landscapes and unfamiliar lifeforms. Some strike a balance between moving and funny, like Otto Tang’s short film about a family watching movies together.
The films came one after another in a seemingly endless stream, and you came out of the theater feeling a little bit punch-drunk. The night was broken up by an intermission, but by the end of it, minds were weary and guts were sore from laughter.
Beneath the crude humor, 5 Second Night offers a valuable look inside the creative process. It shows, above all, what creators are capable of when they aren’t afraid to fail. The environment of the screening is relaxed, low pressure. The animators who put their projects on display have only their own expectations to live up to, and it is under circumstances like these that your best ideas often surface. The films ranged widely in terms of production value, but they are all made simply for the sake of creating something—what other reason does one need?
