Description War of Nuverta : Chapter 5 : Fighting to the Last Breath
By Teebs13
Carston took out a message Aldon had given him to Frederick. It contained his mother's ring and a message of good luck. "Why did he give me these..." , Frederick asked. "I'm afraid to say that your father failed to defend Milstar from the overwhelming forces commanded by Karaj. He was a necromancer with strange otherworldly powers and seemed to slaughter everyone who got near him." , Carston replied in a helpless expression. "Is my father dead Carston?" ,asked Frederick again. "No, not yet at least." , said Carston with some hope behind his trailing words. "Eran" , Frederick asked. "Can you go back to Solaria with some reinforcements for my father?" "Yes Sir Frederick." ,Eran said. "I will ride to Zil-Solcon as fast as I can!" He searched out some battalions and began to depart back towards Solaria.
Frederick was with Carston for a while now. He had green eyes and blond hair with a clear face free of blemishes or freckles. He seemed to eye everything around him in a mysterious way and carried green mage robes. He seemed awfully young for a man in his late thirties as well. "Are you a mage Carston?" , Frederick asked. "Indeed I am, one of the best elemental earth mages on the continent!" , Carston bellowed as he bloated about his skills. Frederick laughed as he said, "Prove it." As soon as he said that, a giant pillar of rock shot in front of him as he ran right into it. "Well, I guess you are." "Yes and I can do much more then that Sir Frederick." ,Carston laughed. They continued on to thier journey to Verdun in the ever slopping fields of the Atlam Plains.
That night a dark figure approached Frederick as he sat on the grass. "Who goes there!" ,Yelled Frederick as he grabbed his sword. "It is I. Your mother Frederick...Please believe me." ,the figure said with such gentleness in her voice. "My mother is dead though. When I was the age of five. Who are you really!" ,Frederick said with fear in his voice. The face of his mother was lit by the moonlight as she walked towards him and said. "Yes I should be dead, but I was given another chance by the Lords of Time like your grandfather to fix changes made by Morvalian officials that are messing with the flow of time. I gave Carston the ring so I could find you." "Oh mother I missed you so much but why have you come back?" ,Frederick asked as tears rolled from his eyes. His mother said, "I have come to warn you that you are doomed to lose the battle of Verdun because of what Morvalians have done to the flow of time. You must hold them off and then retreat to Liat and I will have reinforcements for you there." Frederick looked as the figure disappeared into dust that glittered away into the dark fields.
They marched for three days as they finally saw the mountains of the Mortalan mountain range. The mountains shot above the clouds surronded by grey clouds as they ascended from the Atlam plains into the mountains. "So they weren't bluffing when they said the mountain range is a natural barrier." ,Frederick said as he sat on the grass. "It's absolutely amazing isn't it Sir Frederick. The power of the Earth is this powerful in such a raw form." ,said Carston as he observed the mountains with delight. "Carston it's just hunks of rock that were projected upward by the movement of the earth." ,Frederick said teasingly as Carston starred anxiously at the mountains. "It's not the mountains I'm worried about its the footsteps of an army inside of them..." ,Carston said as he froze. Frederick grabbed him as he said, "Let's hurry to Verdun then shall we?"
The streets of Verdun were empty as the partisans had either left or taken shelter inside their civilian bunkers. It seemed like a completely ghost town except for the thousands of soldiers inside its walls waiting. Waiting for a battle that would decide the fate of the continent. "When do you want to organize the retreat Frederick?" ,Carston asked. "As soon as they breach the western gates." ,Frederick replied. "Alright I will notify the troops and your retreat orders will be followed." ,said Carston. The commander of the enemy forces was an evil mage named Ziloc who had been said to ward his entire army from taking any punishment until they broke through the city walls.
The army approached as the cannons and ballistas from the guard towers fired and arrows littered the mountainside behind them. The enemy was taking high casualties though they seemed to be coming back from the dead as they were killed. "What madness is this!" ,Carston yelled as he noticed the resurrecting corpses. "Frederick we must kill Ziloc and his necromancers before we can stop them!" Frederick ordered an attack on all necromancers which seemed to show a turning in the battle until the unimaginable happened. Troops began to fall dead on the ground as if someone was sucking the life out of them one by one. "Ziloc is using forbidden magic that was cast away to the Lords of Time. Frederick we must withdraw immediately!" ,Carston yelled. The resurrected warriors burst through the gate as they approached it as Frederick called the retreat. "O gods it can't be possible... I have failed everyone"
