I was the first member of my family to know – possibly the first person in all of tiny Paragonah, UT to know. It wasn't like in the movies as I sat up far too late (or early, rather) watching the news. There was no little outbreak and the newscasters weren't saying that it was under control. No. The outbreak started in a large hospital in the middle of Las Vegas, NV. I watched with a silent gaping jaw as images of people devouring other people flashed across my T.V. screen while the shaking voice of the female newscaster explained what I was seeing. She didn't need to explain it, and though she said it was some sort of mental disease that was driving people crazy or something, I knew better.

I laughed because I didn't know what else to do and then lit a cigarette right there in front of the T.V. in my parents' living room,

"And so the zombie apocalypse starts."

It wasn't until two hours later that my family finally believed me. We all stood around in the living room with no light except that from the T.V. and the bit on the end of my sixth cigarette and watched the screaming people on the screen. Las Vegas was being told to evacuate and images from helicopters with spotlights were being streamed live to the entire country. One of the helicopters flew over a part of Vegas that looked terribly familiar to me, shining his spotlight around to show all of the congested traffic on the small neighborhood streets. Until the moment that a blue 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder came screaming around a corner driving the opposite direction as everyone else and then proceeded to slide to a sloppy stop in front of a house that I knew all too well, I had felt nothing. I had been a stone statue with a cigarette in her mouth that was staring at a T.V. screen as though the images on it were from another dimension.

Not anymore.

"Sara…" It was all I said before standing in front of the T.V. and snapping the rest of my family out of shock, "We have to do something. We can't just sit here and watch while those fuckers devour everyone in Vegas and then start making their way here!" That was all it took for my dad to snap into action and kick everything into gear.
