Description
Discovery of the Mind
First Discovery
The voices seemed to echo throughout the forest. They were singing to the sounds of the drums. He crept to the edge of the trees, watching the movement of the shadows as they twirled in the light of a fire.....its warm glow reflected back to him with a strange comfort and excitement. They seemed so cheerful, with a light seriousness reflected in their eyes. It was a celebration......that's what he gathered. Or perhaps just a joyous tradition passed down to their ages. He wouldn't have known the difference.
Every summer these beings gathered around a fire and sang and moved their bodies in precision, as if to tell an important story with each footstep. It was beautiful. The sounds built from their instruments rattled the leaves as it carried through the gentle breeze. From above it made it seem as if the trees were joining this dance. Perhaps they were. The trees had reason to celebrate as much as they, did they not? For they too were alive. He knew this.
He shifted on his perch, watching as the young ones made their way into the swift movement. Their shadows were soft and light compared to the grown shadows that stretched back nearly to his nose. Yet they were filled with laughter and joy and love for the world in which they dwelt. He liked that. They were fearless.....but what would they have had the need to fear? The world was wonder in their eyes, and all that was in it. He could relate.
Slowly he crept closer, he didn't want to interrupt them as he tried to get a better look at one particular being. It was weaving blossoms together in chains and placing them on the heads of the other beings as they danced. Its shadow seemed to soar into the trees from where it stood, making it seem rather elegant. It walked near a small shriveled creature and helped it to walk to the fire. All the beings sat and listened as it spoke. He moved silently out of the forest to get close enough that he could hear what it was saying. Its language was unusual, but he could feel the emotion behind it.
Now he could see them better. The beings were large with wooden faces and feathered heads and bodies lightly patched with fur and dry grass. He listened intently to the old one as it told the tale of joy and woe. At least that's what he gathered. A story of great warriors.....yes that seemed right. He recalled a time in the past when life had not been so peaceful. When the forest was filled with great gnashing and screaming. When ash rained from the skies in abundance and stung his eyes as he sped quickly through the trees alongside his comrades.
Fear was in their hearts as flames caught the trees and choked them with great power, pulling them to the earth. He recalled the cries of the inhabitants as they fled their homes in a great panic. Yes, he thought, that was a terrible time. He bowed his head in memory of those lost. Many of his friends had not made it out alive, he himself was lucky to have survived. He raised his eyes to the old one. He knew the pain in its voice. And shared the joy of the forest's revival.
Now as the beings rose once more, he rose with them to join the world in this celebration of life and freedom. Until the disperse, he danced. Then watched as they slowly walked away, returning to their homes to rest. One being, the one that had woven the flowers, stopped as it headed back. It turned its head to him and smiled. It walked over to his side and knelt down to place a wreath around his head. Its hands were soft and gentle, and it spoke with a calm voice. He couldn't understand what was said, but it felt as if it were calling him by name. He blinked in gratitude, then flew quietly back into the forest....his ebony wings disappearing into the night.
The Second Discovery
Rain. There it was again. Rain. It had rained all night, and was starting to go into the day. She looked out her window waiting for the sun as it slowly pierced the gray clouds and drew the storm to a slow halt. Immediately she was running for the door and stepping into her boots. Before taking off out the front door. Her friends must be worried, she thought. She'd promised that she would meet them by the pond so they could all go to the lake together again. But then the rain started and it had been almost three days without any sign of stopping. So of course, her mother would not let her go outside. But now it had stopped and she could finally go back to the lake. She hoped her friends were already waiting for her, that way they wouldn't have to waste any time.
She sloshed through the puddles in her grassy front yard as she made her way to the fence. Opening the gate she jumped out and began to run. She couldn't wait to get there. The last time they had gone together the three of them had built boats....they were small and made with leaves and sticks, but a boat's a boat. It had been so much fun that they had decided to try and make a real one to ride on. Then they could float around the lake and catch fish, just like her dad.
Her dad loved to go fishing. He would go on the weekends all the time to catch the best so her mom could make a wonderful dinner for them. She had often wanted to bring her friends over for dinner, but she knew that her parents wouldn't approve of her bringing boys home. Well, at least her dad anyway. He'd said that boys weren't allowed over, except for her husband. But she wasn't married yet, so her friends never got to try her mom's delicious cooking. Well then again there had been one time that she'd brought some for them on one of their outings. Come to think of it....they didn't seem to like it very much. Probably because it was cold.
She skipped through the tall grass, planning in her mind how they would build the boat. She wanted to build a big fancy one, but she knew they would insist on keeping it simple, since something big would be too much to handle. Plus they wanted something they could jump off of into the water, like a diving board. She knew they had docks for that, so she didn't understand why they would want a boat they could jump off. Maybe they wanted to try jumping in the middle of the lake. She thought about it. She didn't really like being in the deep part of the water. She couldn't swim quite as well as they could. But then, they had been given lessons, and she hadn't.
Excitedly she waved her arms as she neared the pond, calling their names. Stopping to catch her breath, she peered through the tall stalks of grass and looked around, but couldn't see them. Had they forgotten? Maybe she was out there a little too early. She looked up at the sun. No, it wasn't that early. Maybe the were just being slow....she stepped up to the edge of the pond and squinted. No there they were. She beamed brightly "Sorry to keep u waiting!" She reached in and lifted them by their shells and skipped off to the lake.
The Third Discovery
The sky was as bleak as it could be for a winter sky. Snow danced from the clouds down to earth where it joined those who had past fallen and been shaped into foot prints of children running by. This was a familiar road for him. He recalled having walked down it many times before to get to the market to pick things up for his mother. How many years ago had that been? He wasn't totally sure. He had left this town some time ago and traveled the world.
He thought about the places he'd been. Italy.........America......Canada......France....and Africa too. He had really liked that one. It was nothing like the place he grew up. Then again, none of them were really. Or perhaps it just seemed that way because of the advancements that had been made. People were using cars now instead of carriages, he had very much liked riding in carriages though. The horses were so full of life and fun to pet and speak to. He recalled talking to his horse. She would nod her head and twitch its ears in response to every thing he said. That's how he knew she was listening.
Now that brought back memories. He used to ride his horse across the fields outside his house with his friends. They would ride down into the valley then stop to pick apples for the horses and then lay out in the grass reminiscing in the good times and chatting about the pretty girls. He remembered them well. Some beautiful women he used to go to school with......he turned subconsciously heading in the direction his school house used to be. He had never been very good with them.
He shut his eyes and took a breath, recalling one in particular. She had shimmery blonde hair and pale blue eyes that sparkled like sapphires in the sun....He had tried to talk to her. Never got more than two words out when he tried though. Those being "hello" and "Good bye". But she didn't seem to mind that he kept trying. She would smile and ask him about his day and if he enjoyed school.......Now he wished he'd just gotten the nerve to ask her to dinner. But it was probably too late for that now.
He stopped, realizing he must've taken a wrong turn some where. He was standing in front of a church, not the school building. It was an old church, making it stand out in this new world that he had once called home. A petite building seated between two large mountains as they seemed, nearly reaching the sky. He had never felt so small and insignificant before. Slowly he walked up the steps toward the door. Come to think of it....he did recognize this place. He must've been here for something before.....he tried to open the door. It was locked, and probably had been for quite some time. He walked around the building instead.
The walls were old and falling apart, and the windows boarded. It had been such and elegant place in his time.....He smiled. But it was still there and that meant something on its own. The past wasn't forgotten. With a mysterious look in his eyes he walked back down the walk and to the street, disappearing into the wind without a trace.....not even a foot print left behind.
The Fourth Discovery
He knew this song well. he'd played it many times before. His voice heightening those of the people around her as they sang along. The echo of his tune reached the skies......he watched the birds over head as they soared into the evening sky, their wings dipping into the wispy clouds. The colors began to fade and bleed into the trees as the sun lowered behind the mountain. The mountain for which he sang. The trees quivered in the chilled breeze, and creatures settled into their branches to listen to the tale within his song.
"There was once a time of solitude.....when the world was none but endless sea. The water roamed as it pleased and struck the sky as if to catch the birds as they soared by. They were his friends, and he loved them very much. He loved to watch their wings touch the sky, much farther than he could ever reach. But they would land on his back when their wings grew tired and speak with him of the tales of their travels among heavens.
But in time, they would lift off again to go sit among the clouds and rest their wings and the sea would be lonely once again. If only he could find a way to keep them with him so they could continue their lovely stories......over time the sea tried to find ways for them to rest on his waves by lessening their power.....but it never worked. The birds would stop and speak with him then fly away again. So finally he decided to ask the sun. Perhaps he would know a solution.
Sun was wise and powerful. If anyone could help sea it was him. So he asked. The sun knew he would. Leaning his head down he told the sea that if there were land, the birds would stay and many more creatures would come stay with him as well. The sea asked where he could find land. The sun only smiled and reached out with his bright rays grasping land from the bottom of the sea and pulling him to the surface. Now, the sun told him, the birds will have a place to rest from their travels in the skies and they will come rest with you and land.
And as he had said the birds came down from the clouds and perched themselves on the land, grateful for the rest from their long journeying. And from that land trees began to rise to protect the birds and give them homes. Then from there grass grew in their shade and life flourished until the rise of man. Now man cuts down trees to build large homes and create fires and decorations. But don't be angry with man. The trees are happy to share their protection with them. For that is their goal on this land."
As the song comes to a close the animals rise in the trees and sing along, celebrating the good fortune brought from land and the protection of trees. He smiles knowingly. He could still recall the days those creatures had sat upon his branches as he listened to the songs man played. Now he was the singer carrying his story to the world.
The fifth Discovery
She sat down at the piano. Her fingers glided across the keys slowly.....gently....letting the sound carry on the wind down the street. Her friends slowly walked up to her sat on the bench beside her....they began playing their own instruments in league with her own. She smiled and looked about to see if anyone was listening. People were walking by without acknowledgment. She shook her head. They were so busy.....this must be natural for them. She looked back at her music, hoping not to forget a part. Her friends were depending on her to keep the tune.
She watched them around her.....on the guitar......bells....drums....it all sounded so wonderful together. The magic of the music.....it had always seemed like magic to her at least. Its ability to control emotion with sounds....what a thought. But now in the middle of people it seemed like the magic only worked for some people. Then again....this was a rather slow song. She chuckled to herself, wondering what the reaction would be when they got to the best part.
Her friend leaned over to her with a grin. He was enjoying this. He always had. And right then....the world seemed to feel perfect.......the music picked up a beat. People's attention was caught. They started looking and some started dancing. She leaned closer to the piano, keeping the beat as perfectly as she could. Her friends played along as the music got faster, their expressions becoming serious.
The drums beat louder. Young men took women by their hands and led them in dances around the band in the middle of the street. The women's skirts flipping as they were tossed in the air and spun about. Joy filled the area and the crowd rapidly grew. This made her happy. Her theory had been correct. With a disruption in the peacefulness of their quiet music, the still and focus of the town had distorted.
Beside her her friend laughed with excitement. The thrill coursed through all of them as the music reached its highest beat. Another friend pulled out a horn and blew a tune in league with them. Now the entire street was stirring. The dance was traveling and quickly closing in on the band. Closer and closer until with a final beat the song ended.
The dancers stopped......realization slowly dawning on them. Perhaps they were waiting for more. They released their partners and began to back away from the band. Their dream state dispersing as they hustled off, back to what they had been doing. The band members were left behind and became nonexistent as they had once been when the song had first started. They disappeared slowly in the directions they had come.....fading into the distance.
She smiled as she closed the lid of her piano and watched as her friends faded with them. She rose from her seat, collecting the music, and walked to the door of the music hall. She flicked off the lights and walked out.
The Sixth Discovery
He was waiting for her.....He couldn't see anything but flames. And darkness....he was alone. And no matter where he ran there was no escape. There was fear in every direction. He shut his eyes and tried calling out, hoping she could hear him. But instead his voice was swallowed into the darkness beyond the fire. He backed away, until he felt a wall. He shook his head crying. What was he going to do?
He had never been here before. He couldn't even remember how he had gotten there in the first place. He couldn't remember anything really. Just opening his eyes and seeing flames in front of him that looked so close they could burn him any second. But never did. He curled up in a ball and shut his eyes hoping that somehow he would be let out of this.....
He could hear something....a voice? Yes. Maybe it was her coming to save him. It had to be! He jumped to his feet and looked around. He couldn't see her......where was she? He tried to look past the darkness but he couldn't see anything at all....no wait....yes! There! There was a light breaking through! She burst in shattering the darkness like a window that had been struck by a branch. She soared in and flew high over his head.
He reached up to her, crying with joy as she grabbed his hand and pulled him into her arms and rose above the terror he had been in. The darkness scattered, revealing a shimmering starry night. With him tucked close she dove from the sky and flew toward the light of the moon. He smiled and looked down as they flew. Below there were trees glowing palely from the moonlight. He had never know it to be so bright before. Light sparked around him....he jumped, surprised then realized that they were fireflies....they were following them.
He looked back over her shoulder and laughed in excitement. They were all following them. The birds.....the moths.....the fireflies........even the trees seemed to sway in the direction they were going. Rain burst over head. It fell like starlight around them, swirling in the wind and catching on his eye lashes and hair.
He looked to her. She smiled and nodded, knowing. He had never imagined night would be this beautiful. His gaze fell on the moon once again. It lit the way from the heavens to his home below. I can see it!! He beamed, there just below them he could see his house. We're almost there! He held on tight as she swooped and began the descent to the earth below. The creatures following them rose back into the sky wishing him a good night as they left.
He held on as she flew into his window and landed gently on the floor before setting him down lightly.............his eyes opened suddenly. He looked this way, then that then up at the window. It was shut. But outside he could still see the moon glowing. He turned, realizing he was no longer in his bed, and saw her laying next to him, sound asleep. She must've carried him here sometime in the night. He smiled and snuggled up against her, knowing that he was safe as long as she was there.
The Seventh Discovery
Memories.......They had many. Many good......many bad.....many that didn't make any sense later on in life. But it didn't matter much to them. These memories shaped their world and built it for them completely and entirely. They brought wisdom in sound. Sound that could be carried throughout the world....where ever anyone wished it to be. And that's what mattered. The meaning that it could bring to those who could hear it.
It was their creation. It was their prize. It was their passion. And beauty for them to see it in the arms of those around them. Their eyes closed as they soaked it all in. They often wondered what those people thought about when they heard it. No one could really know. Maybe it brought joy and comfort to some and it made them think of their own memories. Maybe it was the building blocks for those memories in general. Or maybe it was their inspiration.
Now that would be something. To be inspiring to someone? That would be nice for sure. They thought so. That's why they shared their sounds with the world. But they weren't alone in this endeavor. Many shared this dream. A dream of inspiration.....that rose from the sound they themselves had heard from others. What a wonderful dream.......The accomplishment would bring much feeling to the world. They knew that too of course.
Now among bright lights and tall buildings they walk to their building. Those that pass smile and wave, knowing who they are. They smile and nod, wondering how many of those people are listening right now.....
Once inside they walk down the halls to their room, where they are greeted by their instruments. With cheerful smiles they come to these.....ready to build more memories together and share them with the world. For now they already know what they want to say. With hearts full their hands build the sound that carries through the building, creating a stir. Those around are stopping to listen.....to hear....to wonder.
Some are joining with voice.....carrying it farther....through the windows and into the streets below. The world stops for a moment, listening. They smile and walk along with a mysterious glint in their eyes. The sound is kept. It's sent away across the land and to places none can imagine. What and accomplishment.......They smile. This was their goal. Perhaps one day their songs will change the world.....or at least, the world of its listeners. That's why they came together to begin with.
The Eighth Discovery
Her eyes fluttered......then opened quickly. She rubbed her head......she must've fallen asleep. She stretched her arms and looked down at the notebook in her lap. There was a large squiggle across the page left by her pencil. She blinked. She couldn't remember what she had been doing.....oh wait, that's right. She had been writing something in the notebook. She turned the page and read her last thought. That's right, she thought then when back to writing. She didn't have too much left to say. Just a few things. She wrote them down, trying to stick with the rest of the feel of the story. Or vignette would probably be a better term. She'd been writing them all day. Little snippets of things that went on in her head.
She closed the book and stood up stretching. She was glad to have that out of her system, now that it was almost tomorrow. She looked around for a moment, then straightened out the couch and started to head for her room. She stopped and turned back with a mysterious smile.......
And turned off the radio.
