This is an illustration from a short story I have outlined. She was a human sorceress that was chased deep into the mountains and left for dead by the people of the region after they discovered what she was and what she was doing. She was befriended by a snow leopard and she made her home amongst them helping them as she could and taking within her for a time,Β the souls of those taken to soon from the world. When they decide they when they ready, she goes to a mountain peak and releases them. Over time though, the souls within her changed her and she began to take their form.
She had come to care and feel for the cats as she could never do her own kind.

What type pencils are you using? I love how you manage to get the white to overlay opaquely. I have issues doing this with prismacolors. Did you overlay this with the pencils or is it a negative space?
I did a similar picture to this a while back ([link] ) so your techniques intrigue me. (Comparing side by side now.) Your grasp of fur textures and lighting put me to shame.

Sorry I'm just getting back to you on this. I was going to reply right away but I spaced it. First off, when I started drawing again, I bought sets of Prismacolor, derwent, and polychromos. I despised Derwent from the git-go and my first major piece was done in Prisamacolor. I didn't like the way they applied, very waxy. But when I applied Prismacolor brand fixative, some of the colors changed drastically and some of the shading disappeared completely.(I use the same stuff on on all my Polychromos pieces and there is no change. Works great) I now use only a few select colors of Prismacolor for special purpose. When I started using Polychromos, the difference was amazing. They applied smoother and the tips didn't break nearly as much and they have many colors that the others don't have that I use in almost every piece I do. I have also found out that about every one of my favorite artists that use color pencils use Polychromos.
I don't use color pencils at all like any of the color pencil books I have read try to teach. A lot of what I do seems to be backward from their methods.
I hate to see any bare paper so I usually apply a lot of pressure. With my fur, I apply the lightest color first and hard to establish the grain and direction then layer. Sometimes 6 thick. My transparencies, fabric, mist, whatever, I start with light lines where folds will be to figure where highlights will be then I lightly draw the underlying surface. Then the fabric, then highlights and shading then some back and forth.
What I know of application, I learned fully from trial and error. Anatomy, perspective and lighting I learned from Books and especially critiques.
If you have any specific questions about any of the techniques I use, ask away and I will be happy to help.

Love the fur texture! I so would like some lessons on how to do that with colored pencils. Maybe I am just not patient enough.

Patients is the key I think. It took me 6 or 7 evenings to do her without BG. I work on every square inch as if it were a complete picture and every pencil stroke counts. I never used colored pencils before till 2 years ago (and I hadn't drawn a pic in 30 years before that). I checked out a couple books on them but they weren't much help and what I know I learned by experimenting and most of what I do is NOT how they teach it in the books, and critique from others is another key factor, and I am still learning from that.
Figure out how far you want to go with your art and do what you need to do to to get there.

BlazeBracard In reply to teiirka [2012-05-29 21:29:20 +0000 UTC]
Well sounds like it is mostly lack of patients. I don't usually get days in a row to sit down with a pic. Right now I don't have a good place to spread out the pencils. I do intend to get back into coloring once I have the space again. Anyway most of my talent comes from self taught stuff as well. I took some art classes in HS and junior college. I learned the most about anatomy from sharing my art in communities and getting others advice. Anyway, it's great that you are doing well with your abilities and pretty quick at that.

She's amazing, and worst case scenario with the fur is that it looks a bit wet, as though she's been in water recently. Personally I prefer to see plantigrade feet when they're supposed to have evovled upright like us, but that's a personal opinion and nothing to reflect on the pic which is absolutely awesome. 5/5.

Yeah, I definitely think this is one of your best, and you've done some awesome ones.
-the subject, beautiful young feline, is lovingly deplicted and shaped at all points. Her expression reflects an emotional height of wonder+rapture+openess that is almost like... first love. The choice of her colors are perfect for a Nordic beauty.
And the textures, the drap of the fabric...but don't get me started. You realize that doing such excellent work and then asking for a critique is really, really a stretch.
So...hummm...
-She's a wonder...but the title doesn't fit her.
-It would be fun to "cut her out" with an art program and try her against different shades of the background. The dark hair sets off her face so nicely I'm curious what more darks in the background would do. For one thing it would make her breath stand out more.
Lovely work Teriika!

I love this piece! Excellent job on the fur texture. Really the only critique I have is that her left arm looks a little off, but that could just be me. I suck at foreshortening. But again, I just loooove this piece.

Gorgeous, like usual. Your talent stuns me, I wish I was that good traditionally. But that takes practice, I know xD. Also, I'm finding where you live. And I'm giving you a scanner. And for a critique, the only thing I could point on would have been to make her calf a little thicker to support the upper half of her body. Other than that, the picture is almost flawless, and completely beautiful.

I have the scanner picked out that I'll be saving for but it will be a little while. The bloody thing is over 2 grand but will scan most of my larger pics. Hopefully by the end of the year.
And thanks.
