Description A quick reference for the powered armor featured in that manga-style test panel I uploaded a few days back: [link]

There was a bit of confusion as to the shape of the helmet. Hopefully this clears it up.

The "Golem" hardsuit is the smallest powered armor deployed by Karic's military. It's typically worn by fire-support specialists attached to infantry squads. The most common armament is a heavy machine gun, with an under-slung grenade launcher or shotgun mount. It only adds a few inches to the operator's height, but drastically boosts his strength and damage-soaking capabilities.

Damn that's a nice suit...
I just love powered armors of all sorts, but this one is just fantastic.
Looks tough as balls but at the same time realistic and feasible.
Although, where would a soldier holster a secondary weapon? Or is this just without any added equipment?

Indeed. Talros' work has been pretty inspirational for me, and you're right on about the helmet: "Full Head Protection" is the inspiration behind pretty much all of the helmets for my Karic designs.

Well, good eye. Appleseed has hugely influenced the way I design smaller battlesuits like this (the larger counterpart to this suit, which I'm currently calling the "Yeti" even uses the same sub-arm / main-arm layout as Shirow Masamune's Landmate designs).

Ah! Now I see it perfectly. I was confused by the shading you put on the shoulder behind the head in the previous comic panel.

Of course, seeing it out of context like that was half the problem. In a real comic, you'd have had the standard establishing shot of the armor at some point, then it would have made more sense to me. Love the design!

I dont see a problem/confusion with the helmet. Looks awesome, but how do they get in and out of that thing? Mainly the shoulder part seems to be "unaccessable", like it needs to be welded around you.

Tekka-Croe In reply to BlutigeHandPlus1 [2013-02-15 23:48:49 +0000 UTC]

The torso armor sort of splits down the middle, with the arms connected to back half and the helmet connected to the back half of the neck. The front half of the torso armor slides forward and down out of the way, while the shoulders rotate out away from the operator, allowing him to slip his arms out of the suit's.

I really love how bulky it is. Suits like the Iron Man armor look like something a hot-rod-loving futurist would build, but this looks like military equipment. It *looks* like it's built for power and durability, and like it has ablative/reactive armor packs and modular parts for field repairs.

You might consider Starship Troopers style hardsuit tactics (and, no, I'm not talking about the fuckup that was the movie). Robert Heinlein recognized what noone else did at the time, and what few have done since; smart munitions are the future. He also invented the concept of power armor, so far as I can determine. The primary weapon of the original Starship Trooper was a multiple-shot guided missile launcher mounted on the back, which could be swung up onto the shoulder with an arm movement and used to engage structures, vehicles or infantry with ease. Combined with grenades, a flame-thrower for close quarters brawling, and a jetpack for maneuverability and better positioning to chuck grenades and other explosives, the trooper was a highly mobile, efficient and versatile tool.

Tech has caught up a bit since Heinlein's time, and there are some fascinating concepts out there that could be meshed into the original tactical scheme perfectly. "Metal Storm" style guided projectiles would give the launcher plenty of capacity without the need for reloads, for example. Alternately, a weapon like the XM-25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, with guided munitions, would be pretty cool. A caseless or Polymer CTA moving-chamber weapon firing sabot'd depleted uranium darts would make a better close to mid-range PDW than a flamethrower, and grenades now come in many shapes, sizes and flavors that Heinlein couldn't have imagined. A properly futurized Trooper-style unit would be excellent for advancing lines, providing heavy support to light infantry, clearing LZs for dropships, scouting...

Just a suggestion.

Well, you could've skipped that first paragraph. I just re-read Starship Troopers a couple weeks ago, and even gave my own take on Heinlein's powered armor: [link]

The powered armor in Novus Imperium (the SF universe which some friends and I have developed. It's typically abbreviated "NI") is simultaneously more and less advanced than what Heinlein describes. Within NI, powered armor has been somewhat viable for a couple of centuries, but it's only been in the last decade or so prior to the story that powered armor has become practical enough to take on true combat roles (thanks to the advent of micro-fusion reactors and ultra-compact, ultra-high capacity batteries).

As much as I enjoy thinking about "Smart Guns" and the like, that's simply not the way NI's firearms have developed (personally, I think target-seeking ammo takes some of the fun and excitement out of the action). We are, however, trying to provide our own distinct take on spacy guns. Things like small, high-velocity tungsten bullets (4-5mm diameter) are the standard, as well as plastic shell casings. Rather than giving ammunition self-guiding properties, firearms in NI tend to have highly advanced optics, able to provide basics like range, speed and projected target leading, as well as more advanced functions such as multiple-target tracking and tactical overlays.

Good to finally meet someone who doesn't go "wut?" when you start talking about Starship Troopers being tactically sound

I understand. Heinlein style tactics are effective, but they ain't quite as fun as good old fashioned bullet hoses or manually aimed weapons. For my experiments in future tech, I tend to go for a more moderate approach; Trooper-esque units are rare, and they also make use of more conventional kinetic weapons, but the jetpack and rocket launcher are still there, though the launcher is not used quite as often as in a pure-Troopers style. Lighter power armored units make the bulk of the infantry. But for that universe, I use railguns rather than chemical propellants.

Polymer CTA and sabot'd small diameter rounds are the name of the game. One of my concepts, the AIR-550 [link] uses a take on it that I think you might find interesting;

5mm tungsten darts are excellent at penetrating armor. Even better when they're sabot'd. And the larger the diameter of the sabot, the more efficient the energy transfer. So, I use 5mm darts in an 8.58mm sabot. But, large diameter, very heavy rounds like 9x39mm Russian can also be very good at penetrating armor at close range. And they can do it subsonically. So, if one slaps an integral suppressor on the weapon (which reduces the sound of the supersonic round to manageable levels), one can have either an ultra-quiet ninjagun, or a longer range, armor piercing needlegun simply by loading different magazines. See, the optimum barrel twist rate for a 5mm and 8.58mm round is almost the same. So I can get near-perfect performance out of either one, without having to change anything.
