Description My character Vance Hayden adapted for .

Name: Vance Hayden
Sect: Belekt
Rank: Omega
Challenges Completed: 1 - [link]
Perks: At-Will Shifting
Age: appears to be roughly 30-35, but was born in 1914 (Had to adjust his original age to suit the group. In my novel he's a bit older, but then my werewolves age a lot slower.)
Gender: Male
Height: 5'10"
Character Use Info: It's okay if you use Hayden in your challenge images under two conditions: 1. Please do not seriously maim and/or kill him. I like him too much! :3 2. Please send me a link of the finished pic so that I may lavish it with affection and tell you how wonderful you are! XD

Personality: extroverted, manipulative, charismatic, extremely intelligent but can act quite immature - especially when he doesn't get his way, likes to remain in control, selfish, narcissistic, cruel, mercurial, unpredictable, possessive/territorial, cold, talkative, antagonistic, sadistic

Fun Facts: Can play the piano, enjoys an eclectic mix of music, dislikes animals, always seems to have a smile on his face - or is otherwise showing his teeth, dislikes dirtying his clothes, loves spicy or salty foods, has an irrational fear of fire, enjoys Warner Bros. cartoons - especially Bugs Bunny, likes to wear headphones when he's working and would probably wear them in his werewolf form if he could as it "drowns out the sound of their incessant whining".

Background: Vance Hayden has always been a lucky one. Born in England at the beginning of the Great War to a well-to-do family, he is the middle child of a litter of five. Both of his parents were werewolves who descend from a long line of lycanthropes dating back to the early sixteenth century.

Hayden displayed an uncanny intelligence from an early age, but was constantly held under the thumb of his father and two older brothers. It wasn't long before he learned how to use his wit to compete in a houseful of dominant, male, wolves, which often lead to confrontations with his father. Due to his head strong nature, his father constantly felt he was under threat and was never shy about using excessive force to reassert his position as 'Alpha'. His mother, meanwhile, never seemed to acknowledge her husband's brutality which at times seemed more calculated than spontaneous. Hayden spent the better part of his youth plotting to overthrow his father and become head of the family or otherwise seek revenge on him for years of trauma. Soon after he was able to change for the first time and learned what he needed from him, Hayden challenged his father which, as expected, resulted in a violent battle for supremacy. It ended in a draw, with Hayden living apart from his family until a chance encounter with his sister revealed that his father had died from his injuries (also he was quite old by this time), and that his mother had disowned him because of this. (There were no legal charges as werewolves tend to handle their own family issues.)

Once again, Hayden set out on his own, and quickly learned to make good use of his wit and charm, taking up odd jobs all across Europe, some of them merely cons. Among them, actor, stage magician, psychologist, journalist, linguist (knows seven languages), salesman, information broker, private investigator, soldier, male prostitute (when he was particularly down on his luck), and mercenary. Because he grows bored easily, Hayden is notorious for jumping from one project to the next, and is something of an adrenaline junky to boot. His nose for adventure has landed him in many a tight spot and if he hadn't been a werewolf, he may have never been able to rebound.

Hayden is very proud of what he is and isn't afraid to play it up whenever the opportunity arises, often indulging in his cravings whether it's for blood or sex, and hasn't been above taking either by force in the past. Although now he would probably argue otherwise. Even though he can come across as unscrupulous, he seems to follow a set of rules that only he understands at any one time. His intentions are even harder to decipher due to the presence of a perpetual leer which has become legendary, and he often has a habit of showing his teeth whenever he's excited. This coupled with his smooth, British charm and knack for observing things has earned him just as many shudders as it has swoons. Depending on who you ask, he's either incredibly sexy or terribly creepy.

Although Hayden can be quite reckless at times, he is always careful not to give his identity as a werewolf away immediately, and this is probably one of the few things that has kept him alive all this time. It is perhaps this selfsame meticulousness that has made him an excellent mercenary. Hayden has had his fair share of run-ins with hunters, especially living in Europe, but he is as adaptable as he is reckless, and honestly feels best hiding amongst humans rather than "tucking tail in some backwoods, country lot", and probably never would have even thought of going to Elkhorn had it not been for one of his jobs as a mercenary. After completing his mission, he randomly decided that he needed a vacation, and thought it rather fitting to "get back to nature", particularly upon realizing how many interesting women people there were residing there. (He seems to have a thing for female werewolves in particular, as, according to him, can "take more abuse".) Hayden joined the Belekt sect on a whim, seeing it not only as an opportunity to show off but also to simply have fun and to perhaps "bring a little class to this army of ruffians".

In spite of the many jobs Hayden has accumulated over the years, he surprisingly, isn't one to squander money and so has amassed a small fortune. Upon deciding to remain in Elkhorn, he purchased some property and a house that he'll no doubt abandon when he grows bored of the place.

TL;DR: Vance Hayden is a scoundrel from England and hails from a rich family of werewolves. He was abused by his father, and upon killing him in a duel for supremacy, was disowned from the family by his mother. He spent the next few years doing odd jobs (and women) all over Europe, while avoiding hunters and acquiring valuable skills on how to survive and blend in with human society. He moves to Elkhorn to finish a job as a mercenary and decides to stay just because he's Hayden and he's just like that.

Vance Hayden (c) Cassandra Aponte 2011

EDIT: Just thought I might give everyone a head's up. Hayden can get kind of aggressive and can easily offend others, especially when it comes to picking up women or picking on anyone he deems weaker than him. If he gets too 'fresh' for your liking during RP or whatever, I'll be sure to tighten his leash. :3

'NOTHER EDIT: Changed it to the Silver & Bone sheet 'cause I liked it so much better than the old one. >.<

That smile... that smile worries me. Heck, this guy worries me. With a history liek that and his personality, this isn't someone I wanna meet... but I do look forward to seeing what he does!

lol I have the same sort of relationship with him in my head. He's a joy to write with and draw, but I would NOT want to meet him in person. XD

Semi-related note: Hayden strikes me as the kind of person who hates his family so much that he deliberately uses his last name just to snub them. I mean, they disowned him, how dare they?

Also, Vance sounds like the name of a Guido. XD

Haha, never thought of that. He probably would change his name actually. And it would explain why Britain has very little info on him. XD Either that or it never really bothered him that much to do so.

That works too. All that talking and form signing.

"Hey, I wanna change my name."

"Sure. What to?"

"This."

"Kay. Why?

"Because Vance is a stupid name."

"It sure is! Sign here, please."

"Finally! That took minutes!"

lmao!

Honestly, I always thought of Vance as a European name. It is Old English and I don't hear it used very often. It just seemed to fit him. I also had a villain in an old fantasy story named Vance so I guess it has somewhat regal connotations to me.

Also it was just kind what he 'told' me his name was. I was trying to think of what to call him when it suddenly popped into my head and it just felt right. But so did Hayden (initially Aiden). So I put them together. I call him 'Hayden' though because Autumn dislikes the name 'Vance' as well.

He probably wouldn't get it done legally. He'd just start telling everyone to call him what he wanted. lol

lol Thanks. I thought so, too. I've gotten into the habit of calling him Hayden though because the main character in my novel refuses to call him by his first name (she greatly dislikes it). XD

Do I recall this fellow from a previous picture, and should I now be running like hell due to my, unflattering view?

Unflattering? lol I've drawn Hayden before (actually lots before but most of those are in my sketchbook), but you may recognize him from two other recent deviations on here. I adapted my style to better suit the group though, I normally don't draw my werewolves so lupine. I prefer a more even mix of human and wolf to my werewolves.

Meant when I saw the one which I thought might've been a werecorgi. However! He looks good, I love the different colouration and the smug grin.

Hmm, the pure wolf form doesn't translate so well.
But that sneer in the other three forms is just impossible to ignore
I do like the idea of the classy but unpredictable scoundrel--that's as fine a motivation as any to travel as any

TeknicolorTiger In reply to TheTinkerThinker [2011-05-22 18:24:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. And I think his regular wolf form will look better with colours once I unlock it. If it still looks a little off, I'll adjust the face a bit. I got so frustrated with it that I just kinda cheated and traced a photo. >.< I normally loathe doing that, but an hour of trying to get the face to look like an actual wolf and I was ready to throw the computer across the room. lol

TheTinkerThinker In reply to TeknicolorTiger [2011-05-22 20:27:59 +0000 UTC]

The funny thing is that I've seen so many realistic wolves on DA that I wouldn't notice if they were traced
But yeah, if you're not used to drawing the snouts 'that way' they tend to look funny...

I agree, wolves are overdone, though I still can't help but be a fan...especially if they're vicious werewolves. <3

Yes, it was mostly the nose and shape of the head I couldn't seem to get right. My hand kept thinking 'feline' and he ended up looking like a lion with the body of a wolf. :\
