Description Oil on canvas

I did this for an art course in school this spring.

For those of you who isn't familiar with the wonderful world of Chemistry and Biology, this is what it is portraying:

Purple, round thingy to the left: A cross section of an animal cell.
Green thingy in lower left corner: A cross section of a plant cell.
Long spiral in the middle: A piece of a DNA-molecule.
Top right corner: A crystal of potassium alum on a string
Mirrored, colorful things to the right: An illustration of Chirality in molecules, see: [link] )
Lower right corner: A cluster of Copper sulfate crystals
White box with angles: [link]

Comments and critique is very much appreciated, especially tips on painting crystals!

I think this could do with more shading to give it a more three-d feel. The curves of the DNA only shadow at the very curves which implied they have sudden twists to them rather than continuous ones. There is also a bit of a contrast between the 2-d images and the 3-d ones and I'm not liking it. In general, I think this would be improved with unified lighting and with more focus on the coloring of the objects.

Great work, I'm looking forward to seeing some of this in Biology later this year

Yes, and now you have something to think about to remember the knowledge! Thank you

I love biology, microbiology, physics and all that is science, so had to take a closer look. One of my friends got me started on a series of coloring books. They are a great source of ideas. [link] Anyway, great job. And I like the crystals.

As far as an advanced critique, I would try to add more depth into the composition. Perhaps add more cells in on the right in varying sizes. They sort of dominate the double-helix, which should be the focal point of the composition.

But, I think this is good for the individual pieces, which you have done a great job on. I am inspired to try something inspired by science now.

Thank you for the fav, watch and especially for taking the time to critique! I have given away this painting, but I will definitely think about your advice in future compositions.

And I look forward to see what you would do with the theme "science"!

I saw your submission on the main page, and as a chem nerd, I had to click. I think it looks great. The composition really flows, and all the parts are recognizable (if you know what they are!) The crystals look good too. Props on the double helix - those are hard to do! +Fav!

Fellow chem nerd! Yay!
Wow, fav! Thanks a lot! I actually started the whole thing by sketching a double helix, and were surprised how good it looked. Then I built the whole composition around it.
