Story chapter guide  ]

📌 Just to remember that English is not my first language, if you find any really grotesque mistakes, let me know. But I hope the text is clear enough for everyone to understand and that everything makes sense.

"What is happening, Eryone?" she demanded, her voice a blend of  annoyance and determination. "Don't keep me in the shadows. I wish everyone would stop treating me like a child!"

Eryone's gaze softened, her eyes reflecting both concern and understanding.  She took a deep breath before revealing what she had been withholding.

“I… I suspect something far more sinister, Aerin,” Eryone finally confessed, her voice tinged with urgency. "The healers have confirmed it. The cause of this fatigue and weakness is the Shadow of Aephira, also known as FaeBlight, a fey poison. Somehow, someone poisoned the banquet we had last night, and as a result, many within the court have been left weakened and vulnerable."

Aerin's breath caught in her throat, her hand instinctively flying to her chest as if burdened by the weight of the revelation. "But how? Who could commit such a heinous act?" she exclaimed, a tempest of anger and fear swirling within her.

FaeBlight—a poison of the fae realm. The term was foreign to her, and she had never heard of it. But Eryone's grave tone and the weight behind her words left no room for doubt. Whatever FaeBlight was, it had to be something very dangerous. And as someone who bore the blood of the Fae within her, Aerin couldn't help but feel a sense of vulnerability. She was connected to the fae realm, and that meant she, too, could be ensnared by the poison's grip.

She couldn't begin to imagine what it might do, but the fact that it had weakened many in the court was a troubling sign.

Eryone sighed, her face etched with concern. "We don't know, Aerin. That's what we're trying to uncover. I've entrusted someone with the task of investigating this matter, of finding out who is behind this and why. But for now, we must remain vigilant and take every precaution to ensure the safety of our people."

Aerin's brow furrowed with worry as she processed the gravity of the situation. "And what about the other High Lords?" she asked with concern. "Have they been informed? Are they aware of what's happening?"

Eryone nodded gravely, her gaze fixed on Aerin’s. "Yes, I have already sent word to the other High Lords," she replied. "They are aware of the situation, and I believe they have also been affected by the poison. We are all in this together, Aerin."

Aerin's heart sank at the thought of the entire court being threatened by this malicious act. Her fists clenched, determination seeping into her voice. "We can't let whoever did this get away with it," she declared, her eyes burning with a fierce resolve.

Eryone squeezed Aerin's hand, her grip firm and reassuring. "I share your sentiment, Aerin," she said, her voice tinged with determination. "We will do everything in our power to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable. But we must proceed with caution. This is a dangerous game, and our every move must be calculated."

Aerin nodded. "I understand," she replied, her voice steady. " We will find the answers we seek, together."

Eryone's expression hardened, her gaze unwavering. "No," she said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "I need you to promise me that you will not leave this room until my return," she said, her voice brimming with concern. "No matter who comes knocking, do not open the door for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

Aerin's frustration surged, her brows furrowing. "But why should I be confined while others get to face whatever threats are out there? I can handle myself!"

Eryone's eyes softened with a mix of love and concern, yet her resolve remained unyielding.  "There is a darkness at play, one that we have yet to fully comprehend. Until we resolve this and secured the safety of our court, you must remain here."

Aerin clenched her fists, her voice laced with defiance. "And what about Cahyr? Why is he allowed to venture out while I'm kept as a prisoner?"

Eryone’s features eased, her voice kind but firm. "Cahyr may not be a seasoned warrior, Aerin, but he possesses the skills and knowledge to navigate treacherous situations. It is not a matter of favoritism, but rather a careful assessment of each individual's capabilities. Trust me when I say that I am doing what is necessary to keep you both safe."

Aerin bit her lip, torn between curiosity and obedience. She wanted to know more, to comprehend the situation, but she also wanted to respect Eryone’s wishes.

She looked into Eryone’s eyes, and saw a plea for cooperation.

"What about the gathering?" Aerin pressed, a hint of stubbornness tingeing her voice. "I thought you wanted me to attend, to meet the High Lords and learn from them."

Eryone shook her head, sadness clouding her determined expression.

"Not this time," she declared firmly. "I don't want you exposed to any dangers or troubles."

A pang of disappointment and frustration stabbed at Aerin.

"But I want to go," she protested stubbornly.

Eryone leveled her with a stern gaze.

"Aerin, this is not the moment for arguments," she said sharply.  “You must stay here until we have ensured the safety of our court."

Aerin’s anger faded, replaced by disappointment and understanding. She knew Eryone’s words came from love and protection. Reluctantly, she let out a sigh and nodded her consent.

"Fine," she said, her voice tinged with resignation. "I will stay in this room as you have requested. But please, keep me informed."

Eryone's eyes softened, and she approached Aerin, enveloping her in a comforting embrace. "I promise, my dear. I will not keep you in the dark. "

She released Aerin from her embrace and stepped back, her gaze filled with reassurance. "I know this may be difficult to understand now, but everything will be fine. Trust in me, in our people. We will overcome this challenge."

Aerin nodded in silence.

Eryone brushed a gentle hand over Aerin's cheek, her touch both reassuring and tender. "Don't worry, my dear," she assured, her voice steady. "And once this crisis is over, I will explain everything to you. About the powers you likely inherited from me, about the responsibilities that come with them. But for now, your safety is my utmost priority."

With those words, Eryone stepped away from Aerin and made her way towards the door. She turned back for a moment, and glanced back at her daughter with a grave expression."Everything will be alright," she reassured her once again.

Aerin watched as Eryone left the room, closing the door behind her.

The girl stared at the empty doorway, feeling a cold sweat break out on her forehead. An unsettling premonition whispered in her mind—everything was not going to be alright.
