Description Gonna draw River in a comic later, so had to learn quick.
What I usually do when learning to draw a character:
1. Sketch from direct reference picture of face. Trying to be exact here but also going for the 'look' or 'feel' of the character. This is basically the only step I learn hair in. I'm really good at hair so I don't need a lot of practice.
2. Facial features in art are basically done with a variety of symbols. In any style you'll have various interchangeable categories for each one, like choosing round or square eyes. I draw each part of the face separate and try to symbolize it to make it easier to remember. This makes it easy to practice at school and stuff when I don't have a direct reference.
3. Footnotes help immensely, even if they'd be a little mean to say to someone up front. Sorry, Alex.
4. Body type. Fat, thin, thick, muscly, whatever terms you like to use. River's pretty curvy and thin to average weight, but she looks thicker if you draw her without legs because she's got a short torso/waist. Excellent boobs and legs, in my pervier opinion, and I really have no problem with any of it. *eyebrow wraggle*

Body types are just contour sketches done from whatever pics of her I could find. The more of these, and the more facial-references, the better, but I don't have the time or the resources to do these a lot. So I symbolize them and then practice from memory in the margins of my maths and geology etc.

Thanks for this! it's quite helpful actually. Alex was the first female actress that made me question my sexuality, and it turns out I'm bisexual so she has a special place in my heart

i do this a lot for characters! I also save screenshots and especially panels from comics that have drawn the characters well.  tembrook.deviantart.com/art/El… is the one i did for 11, though since I've added a few from the comics.

This one ended up looking nice enough to post, usually they are messy and not useful to anyone but me at all. Glad you found it helpful.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Four for you Glen Coco.

I can always appreciate the womanly form, especially Ms. Kingston's.

Alex is definitely a C cup. I'm a D cup and definitely have larger breasts than she does. C cup is indeed average for Caucasian women. Her butt is more prominent than in your sketch- most noticeable in the "Pandorica Opens" episode, when she wears the skin tight grey pants. She has pretty close to a "j lo butt"- just with a softer curve- very sexy.

I'm a het female, but Alex's body from breasts to thighs is purely beautiful- absolute classic hourglass shape. Not many woman on TV have that kind of beauty- and that hair- wow so beautiful, and her striking green eyes- amazing, such a vivid green, but you can only see how green they are in good light and fairly close up- but when the light hits her face just right the greeness of her eyes is just stunning.

She does indeed have muscular looking shoulders and arms, in a natural looking fashion- I would guess Alex does regular gym work that involves a fair amount of lifting weights- her muscles are toned like someone who does that.

Her butt doesn't look very prominent in this sketch because the left-hand-side is from a front view and the right-hand doesn't show her legs and is not a full profile (I couldn't find a good profile ) but instead is a 3/4. Butts aren't even really visible from the front. That's all love-handle(which is a muscle)->hip->thigh.

Plus, clothes make a woman! She tends to wear flared tops and other clothes that emphasize her figure a lot, and dresses right for her body.
My definition of her cup size is once again based on artistic view and clothing choice. She definitely looks to be a D when she's wearing sexier clothing, but if she's wearing something more down to earth it's a C. It's more of a self-reference on how big to make them look. If she's gonna be crawling in sewers, definitely smaller, for example. She's a practical woman who would totally wear a sports bra if she had to get down and dirty.

I am a gay female, and I think her entire body is gorgeous. Even wrinkles don't start taking away looks for me until you get 50 or upward, I just think they make woman look more refined and mature.

Muscles are definitely a plus for me, flabby and skinny arms aren't really my type. And actually having a bigger butt and thighs indicates larger muscles in those areas, meaning she has strength training in her legs and back too. Cardio training causes skinnier thighs because it's fat loss over muscle gain. When you have fatter thighs it just sort of blends into your butt, not like the J.Lo style sexy butt.

I can talk about woman body types all day all night so sorry for the long rant. Pretty much every woman between 90 and 200 pounds is my type.

Hey, not a rant at all.

Some pics to show you why I'm rather certain Alex is a C cup.

My sister C cup:

Me D cup:

I can look at the pictures of my sister and me and then compare to Alex and my sister's breast size look the same as Alex, mine are noticeably larger.

When she wears less fitted clothes- like the military uniform she looks B cup, but the fitted/ revealing ones you can tell she's a C. It's just most women on TV are a B at the largest, and rather skinny as well- like Karen Gillan (it's even more extreme on American TV of course...) Alex looks quite womanly compared to them of course, but when you see her in convention pictures with more average sized female fans you see how slender she is and that her breast size doesn't look that large... not small, just an average C cup.

Well, like I said, it's more a self reference. I tend to draw boobs on the small side so when I draw thinking 'D' I end up with 'C'. Even this sketch shows that.
