Description Oh hey, another female character! Well, same one as this post from yesterday, actually. I still don't have a name for her, but it'll come to me one day.

I know I still need a lot more practice with drawing ladies than I've already done, but I'm a lot better than I used to be! I've learned some of the rules, but there's plenty more I still need to figure out.

Self-critique: I need to figure out a good eye shape for lady characters. This one is alright, but I think it could be a lot better.

Ladies are hard to draw, and I say that as one! Female features are often exaggerated in cartoons...one of the things I found to help me make a grown-up anthro bunny look feminine was to base the facial features on one of the Frozen girls o  of all things (this was purely based on a compliment from my family when I copied the characters while colouring with my young niece).

The extension on hips works well here, I don't know how real ferrets faces work for female (probably the same way as most mammals with not a great deal of difference in looks between the sexes), but animators usually make the necks longer and thinner, and the face is more rounded and short nosed. I wish someone animated me!

Anyway, that's my take on it, it's still a great character and I get the feeling this femme ferret would be much more at home drinking with the vermin that putting on make-up.

Yeahhhh I may need to try higher cheekbones or something next time. That seems to be a more common trait in females. I did try a longer/thinner neck, but I could probably push it further.

Also your last sentence is right, I imagine her being a little bit of a tomboy, consider who she hangs out with. x)

If your job was to make a female character then...I can feel she's feminine. I think you nailed the result

She's pretty nice to be honest, nice work

Aww, what a cutie she is!
You could try out almond-shaped eyes. It gives lots of feminine look. And visible eyelashes too, they sure will make a contrast.

I try to avoid eyelashes just because they seem kind of cliche to me. I feel it's harder, but more effective to imply gender with body shapes and proportions, so I'm going in that direction! I do need to figure out a good eye shape though.

No problem ^_^

Can you give me a tip on how to draw eyes,by the way?

Great job, Temiree! I agree with Kelaiah, that body is female, but face is.. you can guess. Maybe make something with her eyes, not eyelashes, but make them more narrow?

And what about ornamentals? If she is Redwall-style vermin, and vermins, how we know like bracelets, bracelets on tail, rings in years. If you want of course

Temiree In reply to RattytheScourge [2015-11-04 03:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'll need more practice to hammer out those masculine features that are passively there in all my art. Also a bracelet could work, yeah.

Kelaiah [2015-10-29 07:13:03 +0000 UTC]

Her face is still a little on the masculine side, but her body definitely seems a lot more feminine. Perhaps you could make her muzzle more slim, her overall features more fine and/or "delicate"? Actually, if you want a better idea of how to design your OC's face, perhaps you could study the females of the Kung Fu Panda movies, and compare them to the males of their species and see how each gender is specified?

Also, I agree with LDboy's suggestion for "Ferra" for your character. True, its a bit of a cliche play on words regarding her species, but I think it can be pulled off, depending on how you name all your other characters.

Temiree In reply to Kelaiah [2015-11-04 03:39:51 +0000 UTC]

With more practice I'll hopefully learn to get those masculine features out. With this I mostly tried to make her face as slender as possible.

Kelaiah In reply to Temiree [2015-11-04 05:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you will. Heh heh, though I'm one of those lazy types who just adds eyelashes to the females - although I do like to think I do more with my female's faces than that.

Nice! It's hard to draw anthro ladies, but you're getting there. I love the soft and approachable feel this drawing has.

Eye-wise, I try to give my ladies more diamond or almond eyes than the rounded ones my guys have, but that differs from character to character as well as artist to artist.

Temiree In reply to SaraaLuna [2015-11-04 03:39:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Also I'll see what I can do regarding the diamond/almond shaped eyes. I was sort of going in that direction with making them wider than taller.

LDboy [2015-10-29 03:12:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't think there's anything else to make her eyes feminine without resorting to lashes, especially if she doesn't wear mascara.
As for names, if you were going for a 'species' name then Ferra would be nice, if not then maybe something like Alys or Gwendelynne.

We'll have to see! I'll be making more attempts. I also like that name Ferra.

Well, I was rooting for your endeavors to draw female characters. I drew a lot as a teenager, but never figured out how to make any of my characters appear convincingly feminine. :-/

MochiFerretArt [2015-10-29 02:28:24 +0000 UTC]

^^ Maybe some lashes would make her look more ladylike, I think the shape is fine, but lashes could likely bring it out of her ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Temiree In reply to MochiFerretArt [2015-11-04 03:37:47 +0000 UTC]

I try to avoid using eyelashes to tell if a character is female or not personally. I want to try to do it other ways like body shape. x)

I may accent her eyes a little with making the top line a bit thicker, but I'll try to avoid those giant ones you see in cartoons.
