Oh-oh~

The fighter names are the names of the characters belonging to my patrons! I made a post asking for anyone who wanted their character to be part of "a list" in the comic, and those are the ones I got. :3

The lesson here Nes and all of us can take from is that you can't always win, but it's about how you comeback from a loss and learn from it.

(Also I see a certain fox of mine that beat Taylor on July 1st, 2000. Thanks again for that small Easter Egg.^^)

Reading at this again at higher resolution, I notice that a lot of Irwin's losses happen late in his career... I wonder if this means anything *hmmm*

This page tells me so much about the world.

I now know this story takes place in the modern day with real countries existing.

And my goodness you're great. Every page is dripping with emotion.

voleitor [2019-11-23 12:16:14 +0000 UTC]

Amazing again. Well, I think Irwin just wanted his son to admire him, not knowing about the lost matches. I think to just not give up on him. It's an idea, I don't think he's a bad father, I think he did it for his son, to keep his head high with his father's record.
Anyway, good job again!

Wow, not a perfect record at all then... how did he manage to keep quiet about 12 defeats... and a draw?
Also, the family name's Irwin? Is that a tribute to the late Crocodile Hunter?

I'll be covering the reasons why it was covered up, and a couple of ways how Nes never found out later on. I doubt I'll be able to explicitly go over every single possibility and how it might have been avoided, but all I can say is, yes: Nes never found out his Dad lost while growing up.

Ahhhhhhh! Now things make more sense. Seemed a bit unlikely that Irwin (oh wait, that's only his surname? His first name's Taylor? Oh, cool. So Nestle is "Nestle Irwin", haha) would have won every fight, though at first I figured, "It's fiction. Anything can happen." Except you've always gone for more of a sense of realism in your work, so this fits in better.Β

But wow, so Nestle only knew about the 18 wins he father got, but never knew about the 12 losses or the one draw... must have been a pride thing on Taylor's part. Understandable. He didn't want to let his boy down, or at least didn't want Nestle to worry.

I gotta give you credit for the page layout in the third panel, though. It looks so real, like an actual archive. How did you come up with so many different names? Are any of them references to anybody you know or know of? Also, I can't help but notice how some of the combatants are Canadian. Though one is British ("Tibs" Thicktail). I'd love to see the full page image so we can see every detail about Taylor's fighting history.Β

...Huh. At first, I thought the three fights at the top were the first fights ("I lost my first one too, son!"), but after looking at the dates, i realized they were actually his last ones. Taylor must have been forced into retirement. His performance was going downhill.Β

Also, real quick, I know what "KO" stands for ("Knock Out"), but what do "UD", "RO" and "SD" stand for?Β

Temiree In reply to Kelaiah [2019-11-23 08:47:26 +0000 UTC]

I really appreciate these deep insights into the comic! They help me gauge whether my storytelling is coming across exactly how I want it, which it seems to be. :3 Thank you so much!

1. Yeah, he went by Irwin in the ring, so I reference him as Irwin elsewhere. I also made it so his shorts say "Irwin" too to help reinforce that. It's how things sometimes go in other sports, where a person will be more known by their last name than their full name, so they'll be referenced as such (eg. Gretzky, instead of Wayne Gretzky). Sports announcers often call athletes by their last name, rather than their full name, for the sake of brevity. But yes, that means Nes's full name is Nestle Irwin! I chose Irwin as a reference to Steve Irwin (since he's an Australian species, and Steve Irwin was a great person). Taylor is a reference to my cat. She's getting older and probably won't be around much longer, so I wanted to put this in as a reference to her. And finally, Irwin is a pun that goes along with the theme of the story so far - IrWIN. Get it?

2.Β The win/loss thing will be explained in more detail later, but yes, there's definitely a reason why they never let Nes know about when he lost.

3. The page layout was inspired by how Wikipedia does it! Look up boxing or MMA fighters on Wikipedia and you'll see. The header I had to do myself, though. I can show a full page sometime although it doesn't go far past what I needed.

4. The character names belong to characters of patrons of mine! Specifically the higher tiers - Tier IV and V. I thought it would be a fun reward, so I made a post asking for character names, and those are the ones I got. :3 I forgot to mention it in the post, so thanks for reminding me.

5. Mars261 got it perfectly right. As explained I think on page 7, there's two ways to win in this sport. You either knock out your opponent, or you get them out of the ring and force them to make contact with the ground outside of the ring. However, for the sake of safety and keeping things on schedule, fights can't go on forever. I haven't specified how long, but after a time limit, the fight ends if neither fighter has completed either objective. At that point, a panel of judges (five in this sport, but usually three in real life sports) decide who performed better. Who landed more blows, who didn't get knocked down as much, etc. If the judges are split, it's an SD - split decision. If they all agree, then it's UD, or unanimous decision.

You're very welcome, dude! It's my pleasure. With a comic of this quality, it bears having the occasional in-depth, over-analytical comment. But seriously, you do obviously put a lot of thought and effort into your work, and have undertaken quite a project here. I figured you'd appreciate something other than "Cool comic!"

1. I'm not familiar with sports and how famous sports players are usually addressed, so I wouldn't know. Although I've only ever heard of him referred to as "Wayne Gretzky" instead of just "Gretzky", but oh well. It makes sense that announcers would abbreviate. Heh, and it's funny to hear Steven Irwin be referred to as "an Australian species"... oh wait, not unless you meant that *Taylor* is an Australian species? D'awww, and I love that you referenced your cat like that! Sigh, it's sad when pets die... I'm pretty certain my grandma's dog, Dudley, isn't long for this world either. But HAH! I love the pun, I'm a sucker for those kinds of things!

2. Funny that nobody else would have told or mentioned something like that to Nes, but maybe nobody knew he thought his dad never lost. Maybe Nes was told not to brag about that, as it would be "impolite" or something.Β

3. I looked it up, and yeah, you're right! Yeah, I'd love to see the full page, though that's too bad that it doesn't show all the other fights. Oh well, I guess it'd be a bit much to come up with 31 different opponents and places and outcomes and such.Β

4. Awesome! Yeah, you're right, that would be a fun reward! And you're welcome. X)

5. Those rules make sense. I like a bit of world-building! I can't help but be curious about Louis Potter, the guy that fought Taylor to a draw... he's the only one (visible) on the list that's neither American or Canadian.Β

Also, on a bit of a random note, I'm actually kinda relieved that Taylor was revealed to have lost some fights, because a few pages ago, some random commenter started talking to me about how Nes' dad was a "coward who chose only opponents he knew he could beat." Which was extremely presumptuous if you ask me; the guy admitted he didn't know if any of that was true, yet he said it all with such conviction. I'm curious what he would have to say if he kept up with your comic.Β
