I've been looking forward to doing this page. I went back and forth on whether or not Nes should swear, but I decided to go with it (in a censored form), because I really wanted to make the emotion Nes is going through punch as hard as it could. His Dad dying once was traumatic enough. Now, from his perspective, he's just died a second time.
Do I support Nes’s behavior here? Of course not! But he’s feeling incredibly vulnerable here, for various reasons. I wanted my characters to have flaws in this story, especially since it’s a tale about perfectionism. Nes acting out on this page here is one of those flaws.

While I can sympathize to an extent, Nes will no doubt later realize that even if he -had- been told the truth, kids still end up finding out their youthful filter kept them from perceiving a -lot- about their parents. It's just part of life.

I'm gonna be real; Nes is not taking this very well, and he's even taking it out on his own mother... Thinking straight or not, he has no right to verbally abuse her like this! Even if her good intentions were poorly thought out, she was only trying to protect her son...
In the end, it boils down to one simple result... pain...
A rookie who physically and psychologically got hurt badly, breaking down and lashing out at the only family he has, and his mother is powerless to do anything about it.
If there was ever a "Break the Believer" Moment, this would be that moment... and it is heartbreaking...

It's not so much that he is swearing, but that he is swearing directly to his mother in her face. I'm sure he will regret the outburst but I can't blame Nes, he's lived a lie for many years.

While I do feel sorry for Nes's mother in this, I also feel sorry for Nes himself. I relate to him a lot here.

I mean, I understand why Nes is so angry and I understand his point in all of this but I think he should be careful not to say things that he might regret tomorrow, especially since he has his mother in front of him. By the way, this is a great page.

I reread some of the previous pages. With the loss of the match and the fresh trauma of losing his dad, I can see why Nes would be in a state fragile state in this scene. It sucks that he had to let it out at his mom, but I'm sure he'll make it up to her.
Also, great work on the expression in that last panel!

As sorry as I am for Mrs. Taylor, she should have known better. Yes, that's right everyone. I'm actually siding against the mother in this scenario. I understand why she lied, but again, she should have realized that there'd be consequences. It really is as both Nes and you have described, that it's like his dad has died all over again. 
You made the right choice in having Nes swear in this moment. It really does add the proper punch (no pun intended) here.

Haha. I know some people might think he's overreacting, especially since I post pages so infrequently that it doesn't have the same impact as an actual printed comic.
The way I justify it is that this is Nes's low point. He lost his debut match, so he's embarrassed. His Dad died again, this time in spirit. He has a concussion so he has an awful headache (yet to be mentioned). He finds out the next closest person to him in life was lying to him this whole time about something very important and central to his lifestyle up to this point. He feels incredibly vulnerable right now, so, he acts out!

Yeesh. That's...not a great way to be taking this. Understandable, I get where he's coming from, but it's not a great way to look at it. And yeah, it'd probably have been better if she'd told the truth but it happened for all the right reasons. It's probably just that at a certain point it felt there was no way she could start telling the truth because it would mean admitting to all the lies. Speaking as someone who's, uh, dug himself a little too deep at a certain point. But who hasn't?
My point is this is a very (pardon my word choice here) humanizing moment for these characters and that makes them very relatable. And that is awesome. You are awesome, and this comic is very awesome so far. Keep up the good work! ^_^

I'm really glad you feel that way! It feels a bit of relief to hear someone say, "I don't support how this character is acting here, but it makes for a better story." I was a bit nervous to do this page and share it because I knew some people wouldn't like it. And of course! I don't support Nes's actions here either. But the way I see it, flawed characters are a lot more interesting, especially this the central theme of this story is perfectionism.
