Description Black and red India ink, sharpie and watercolors on watercolor paper 240lb/300g.

"In Greek mythology, Lycaon was a king of Arcadia, son of Pelasgus and Meliboea, who in the most popular version of the myth tested Zeus by serving him the roasted flesh of a guest from Epirus in order to see whether Zeus was truly omniscient. In return for these gruesome deeds Zeus transformed Lycaon into the form of a wolf, and killed Lycaon's fifty other sons with lightning bolts; the slaughtered child, Nyctimus, was restored to life."

Hey there! Your whole gallery has such nice traditional stuff - you make me want to try watercolors out! Anyway, I chose this one of yours to comment on because of the stylization and contrast. The juxtaposition of the soft colors and bold sharpie is a really neat effect that reminds me a little of Japanese wood blocking. I also enjoyed reading about the myth this painting is based off of and think that your execution definitely matches the gruesomeness of the story. Neat stuff, here!

Thank you very much for the comprehensive feedback! This piece also has two kinds of India ink. I love mythology so, I was very fired up by the subject. Watercolor are an awesome medium. That said if you can afford it, try it with at least student grade paint and nothing from the crayola section you will get discouraged really fast!

No probs! Have you done more myth-themed art since then? I bet it would be a really interesting series!

And yeah, I've heard that before about watercolors. I'm trying out acrylic paints right now - have you ever used those before?

I have used acrylics a few times, but it was a long time ago. I do not feel they flow as much as watercolor and I love the transparency feature of watercolor.  As for myth art I've colored a gorgon a bit before this.
