Description The Underworld

Acheron

I found myself on the shores of woe,
Where I have nothing but a coin of gold,
I saw an old naked man on a raft of wood,
I felt the urge to talk to him but did not know if I should,
He started rowing towards me and I see that he looks dead,
Withered and pale from his toes up to his head,
He outstretched his deathly hand without so much as a word,
I then put the coin on his palm and he took me aboard.

Cocytus

I then landed on the shores of lamentation,
Where the unburied earn their peregrination,
They earn passage by wandering its shores for a hundred years,
They cannot escape their fate by sneaking as Cerberus has sharp ears,
As I was buried I was taken from this dreadful place,
A place where there is no joy on anyone’s face.

Phelgethon

I then passed the shores of fire that burns but does not consume,
Where the tortures of the damned resume,
Forced to burn in the river where they remain,
While their flesh it is maimed,
I did nothing so deadly wrong,
To cause me to be included in this wretched throng,
I therefore bypassed this horrid abode,
Where the damned now call home,
I then went to the river of oblivion,
Away from the tortured souls within.

Lethe

I then stopped at the river oblivion,
Where I was forced to drink to forget the world I was living in,
I took a long deep quaff and forgot my former life,
Possessions, land, friends, family, a lover or a wife,
All of them forgotten and a true shade I have become,
And now I have an emptiness I cannot becalm,
I have lost all trace of humanity,
And now it seems to be,
I am yet another shade,
With nothing left of the life I made…

Styx

I am losing all earthly senses as I wind my first curve around the river of hate,
The number of circles I have left to round comes to eight,
Nine times the river winds around hell,
Where the souls of the dead dwell,
I reach the dreary shores at last,
And realize I am the shadow I once cast…

Elysian Fields

I saw this abode of the blessed,
It was without torture plague or pest,
It was a place of peace without joy,
Within dwelled those heroes such as Achilles of Troy,
I will speak of this no more as I only passed it by,
And if I speak of it more it will break my will and make me cry.

Tartarus

The deepest darkest chasm in Hell,
This is where I now dwell,
Around me are souls in agony spreading it to all they see
There is no exception… not even me,
I am forced to wander these endless halls,
Trapped within its eternal walls,
Forced to live with the titans and their endless tortures,
After they tire I do my best to mend my wounds (which is nearly impossible without torches),
I wander the halls without light,
My suffering bringing others delight,
The more I wander the more I see,
What right had they to do this to me,
They claim to be benevolent to those on earth,
But really they only bring then hurt,
I wish I were mortal so I could break these adamantine gates,
Then I could make my escape,
But I am forced to wander these endless halls,
Bound by eternal chains called walls,
The more I suffer and see my new home,
I wonder why they would send me to this abode,
I look at my surroundings and wonder why me,
I guess to answer this I have eternity…

First off, I am AMAZED that you just created the biography of condemned man as he makes his way through Grecian hell. And i am doubly amazed that you actually know about the Rivers and their themes.

Smart kid.

Also, this is a great poem. I get a sense of nonchalance at the beginning, and as it progresses, the subject's fear seems to rise until he's realized that the gods pretty much fucked him over.

Great job!

Ah, Grecian mythology is a passion of mine, as is all mythology, but i know almost everything about Grecian. Kind of ironic for a Christian, am i right?

Anyway, thank you once again

of course! it's been my literary focus in all of my english classes. if i'm given projects, i always do the ones with mythology.

of course, i'm into greek and egyptian, but lately i've been really centering around norse mythology.

i also center center around those two, but i am working on japaneese rather than norse for now, but tell me, have you seen that their gods seem just like human heroes? or am i off there?

you're absolutely right. see, that's why i like them so much, and that's probably why their religion lasted so long among the people: the gods were just like the humans. they could relate so well to one another. they had flaws and virtues and problems, just like humans. unlike humans, however, they also had the powers to give and take away, and that's pretty much all that separated them.

tell me about the japanese, though! i've never really gotten into that. is it interesting?

I do believe I've met the master. Excuse me while I resist the temptation to bow. Such symbolism; it would take me quite a while to comb through this and dig everything out. Even then I would still leave things behind. Your word choice is absolutely excellent...bah. You've rendered me speechless.

Positively stunning job...

As Josh used to say, "Truth is spoken". That it is my, dear. Truth and nothing but.

It was well-deserved.
