Description ...
Tourists in a foreign city. Spending money, sightseeing and enjoying their time.
We've all been like this once.
Is there also enough space for thoughts about all those Big City-Troubles?
Having your eyes closed for things you don't want to see is easy. But if things continue like this, we will have stay blind in the future.

The bigger the city, the bigger the imbalance, and the difference gets bigger and bigger.
People with full, but closed, purses pass people with empty open hands.

Saw this man laying on the street for 2 whole days in the streets of Prague. And probably he's still there.

Hope you like it.

Thanks again to *passacaglia

regards
m

Not bad, a DD... really didn't think that this would happen.
Thanks

Oh man.. This reminds me of a few weeks ago..
In Egypt there are quite a few beggers and my friend always tells me to ignore them because 95% of them are phonies..

But this one old woman was sitting in the middle of downtown Cairo with her medication (or what was left of it) in her hands and sobbing uncontrollably.. so I paid her.

Human suffering.. captivates me and haunts me all at once.

Awesome work. There's so much in it... so much I love.

I see this very often. When I'm in Frankfurt in example or when I was in Duesseldorf. In every corner they are and everytime I saw people like him I think about giving money or not. The first moment I want to but the next there's something in my mind which doesn't want to. It's sad and I'm ashamed that I'm a person like the many other ones who're looking away if there's a beggar.

But the problem is: That if you give all the beggars you see in a town like Frankfurt, you would be a beggar, too. Cruel and unfair, yes.

interessting thoughts... but it's true.
i don't give money to every beggar i see. noone can't and it's not always good. a lot of alcohol and drug abuse is a result of giving them money.
for example i would never give money to a smoking or drinking beggar.
butafter all, in most cities, there are places where they could go, where people help them.
but thats different everywhere.
thanks for the comment

No problem.

Yes, that's a problem, too. You don't know who needs money for really important things and who needs it for alcohol or drugs. So you're giving them no money... because maybe they could be an alcoholicer.

It doesn't take much effort to ignore and it takes even less to give. It's obvious which of the two most people in this world would rather spend their effort on. You're right though; what does this speak of for our future and how many of us will hear it? Very powerful, thank you for sharing.

Wow this is a very powerful picture, it stopped me in my tracks.

Just as a side note - he may well be able bodied, he might well be able to get a job, but i know here in Australia, a large portion of homless people are addicted to substances, seriously mentally ill or both. Which makes it hard to get a job, welfare or the love and support that we all need.

I wish you knew his story.

fantastic picture.

Heart-wrenching stuff. He seems to have dignity. Moreso than the hobos here who ask for a cigarette or money for a 'bus' then abuse you if you don't give them any. I think if I gave this man money, he'd appreciate it to the depths of his heart. And I wish I could.

Brilliant photo and a strong message that needs to get out there. If all the rich, (And maybe the catholic CHURH for that matter!) gave to the poor. There would be no poverty left. (I understand there will always be people who put themselves into this position though. But others have it thrust upon them.)

Scwounch [2006-11-01 22:00:06 +0000 UTC]

I heard a report about pan-handlers in which several were actually interviewed. Most of these beggars (in US cities) actually make a considerable amount of moneyβ€”more than minimum wage. Many even own cars and homes! Most people who live this way choose to do so. Even if you're a convicted felon, it's not impossible to find gainful employment.

If I may, I'd like to point out some interesting things from this image. His hair appears to be in good condition; it's recently cut and looks fairly clean and free of oils that would build up over the course of a couple days had he not showered. His jacket may not be up to the tourists' standards, but it's not too shabby. And are those Adidas shoes he's wearing? He obviously isn't great at making himself look really desperate. Maybe he's just a muslim who had to set his drink down and pray toward Mecca. He is missing the little rug thingy, but hey, deperate times call for desperate measures!

I was in Prague a week ago aswell and I recognized the city as soon as I saw the thumbnail, its interesting how the beggars wait like that all day. I never saw any beggars waiting like that anywhere else. I wonder if they are ashamed.. I wanted to take a similar photo but unfortunately didn't have a camera with me. This is exactly what I was thinking, black and white, maybe only if there could be a white dressed person giving money would be interesting.
nice shot
