Yes, sometimes photographers' prayers are answered! I hung out for quite a while in front of a group of White Pelicans in Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve, and of course, they were facing every which way and refusing to pose for a group photo. I thought how cool it would be if I could photograph them all facing in the same direction. Soon they all at once began walking from one end of the narrow sand reef to the other. I still don't know why--maybe it was their version of mall walking, or maybe they indeed heard my prayers. Either way, I give thanks to the universe for its endless capacity for surprise.Related content

Thank you sincerely once again! I still don't know what prompted all of the pelicans to start walking fifteen feet in the same direction, but it is fun to capture quirks on camera.

And I am still writing, in fact. I've been going through a few odd starts and stops. But as it so happens, I might be working on a short project coming up that I would like some outsider opinions on, if it's not too much trouble for you.

I would be happy to do so, Bill. I'll actually have a window of comparatively free time in mid-May--just after I hand in my final grades and before I hit the Appalachian Trail. If you have it ready to show by then, that would be great. Otherwise, I won't be free again until July.

No problem! July--or whenever the manuscript is ready--is fine. And in answer to your question, I'm not hiking the entire AT this summer, but I hope to cover the southernmost third. I've been section-hiking it for a number of years, which has turned out to be a great annual joy. Yet I've only hiked in one- to two-week stints--never for five or six weeks. But what is life if not an experiment?
