The next day, Daria, Janice and Ellie were talking together in the school corridors. They were not discussing anything in specific, and their conversation would go with the flow.
Suddenly, Daria jolted up, widened her eyes and turned her head to face Janice.
"OH", she loudly said, catching the cheerleader off guard, "I've just remembered; there's a dance being held at the school gym this Saturday night! Everyone who's anyone is gonna be there, but you have to dress up for the part. I was wondering if you wanna go with me, Ellie and Ralph! They will serve pu~uuuuunch!"
"A dance?" Janice raised her arms in excitement. "I'd love to go! I just have to make sure I have a good enough dress."
"Great!" Daria replied!
Ellie then raised her arm and called her friend: "Hey Daria, you think that pink-haired skank who dissed me two weeks ago is gonna be there? She hasn't shown up in school yet, but she could try to get back on me, know what I'm sayin'?"
As Daria and Ellie discussed their current matter, Janice quickly started reflecting over this new twist. "Perfect", she thought, "exactly the kind of opportunity I needed: an exclusive nighttime social gathering! This feels like a window just opened up. I finally have everything I need to proceed! I better start getting to work then..."
"Well", she spoke up, "I'll have to make a phone call to see if I can rent a dress in time for the dance. It's much cheaper than going out and buying one!"
"Good idea!" said Daria. "Yeah, you should do that!"
"You know what, I'll just go ahead and do it now. I'll be back in a sec!" Janice started to walk away from the two girls.
"Alright girl, later!" Daria shouted as her friend left their company. She then turned to Ellie. "I bet you're gonna get yourself a shamelessly revealing outfit for the dance, am I right?" she jokingly accused her.
"Hey," the girl answered, with a smirk etched in her face, "it's not my fault that I hate dresses as a whole, they're just too sappy! If you're dragging me into it, I might as well dress up in something I'm comfortable with... and that still shows my perks."

Not long after, they heard someone calling out to them: "Hii! How are you two?"
It was... Janice? Already? That had been one very quick call. She looked different; she had put her glasses and uniform on. The two friends were confused, to say the least.
"H-hey, you're back already?" Daria asked. "Did you get everything worked out?"
"Huh?" Now Janice looked baffled. "Worked out? For what?"
Daria was not understanding what was happening, but nevertheless she smiled at her friend and answered: "F- for the dance this Saturday night, silly!"
The shy girl widened her eyes. "There's gonna be a dance this weekend?"
Ellie frowned, certain that Janice was playing a joke on the two of them. "Yes, we've been talking about it for a bit now..." Daria explained anxiously, but at a calm pace.
"Huh. I dunno if I can, though." Janice looked down, and started to blush. "I-I've got things to study for. I have a t-test next week..."

Daria knew her friend well. She was just making excuses not to go. Still, she could forgive her for that; she was just too shy to go to those sorts of events on her own. So she decided to give her a little push. "You're not fooling me, girl. I know you're free this Saturday. What do you say we three girls go there together?"
Janice still looked uncertain of whether or not she should go. Daria only needed to push a little harder.
"Come on, I'll even help you choose your dress if you want to! I bet there'll be lots of cute guys there too..." she said, placing her hand on her friend's shoulder. Janice blushed even harder when her friend uttered the last sentence.
Finally, she decided: "A-A-alright, I think I might go there. But you don't have to help me choose my dress, Daria. I know what I want: a pure white dress. Y-you think that would be cute? A white dress... with a pink ribbon?"
Daria said excitedly "Sure! That sounds super cute!"
"T-thanks. I might meet you there." The bell rang. "Oh, I'm late for class! See you two later!" Janice hurriedly headed to her class.

"Bye!" Daria waved. She noticed Ellie giving her a strange look, something between bedazzlement and pure "are you kidding me?". Daria was about to comment with her how weird that had been, when they heard another voice come from behind them:
"I'm back! So, I talked to this guy who has a store downtown, and he says he has a dress that suits me perfectly. Get this: it's glossy green. It's gonna cost me 30 bucks, AND it comes with black velvet gloves! Amazing, right?"
Now the two girls were just freaked out. Janice was with them again, but not only was she back to wearing the clothes she had earlier, not only did she come from the opposite end of the hallway, not only was she about to miss class (as her hardworking self would never let her), she was contradicting what she had told them before.
"Oy vey..." crossed both Daria and Ellie's minds.

I have no idea if renting a formal dress with gloves for 30 bucks is expensive or cheap as hell. You girls tell me, I never had to do it so I dunno.
