This is an excellent photo! I've never actually seen aurora myself, being at the wrong latitude and all.

Incredibly beautiful. Definately a case of in-the-right-place-at-the-right-time!

in the future, i think your aurora shots might work better if you underexpose just a tad...but you've been shooting them for a while, so maybe you've got it down just right already
and i *seriously* envy your Canaditude when it comes to things like this...wish we got the Lights around here

Thanks for the tip. Just curious why you think underexposing would help though. I know if I set the ISO lower I could have less noise, and if I used a shorter exposure, I could capture more detail in the auroral rays, but I'd love to hear your take on it.

my *theory* is that it might bring out the colors better...they seem a tad washed out to me. you could easily try it in photoshop with this image, not really neccessary to do it in-camera...plus the land seems a bit overexposed.
i don't actually have any experience shooting stuff like this, just my own rambling ideas

Well I actually brightened it up quite a bit in post-processing because it originally seemed a bit underexposed, but maybe I overdid it a bit?

i dunno...i tried bringing the midtones down and the highlights up slightly, then increasing the saturation every slightly, and it looked a little better to me. hope you don't mind me messing with your stuff; i didn't save it in any case

Love the colours, the stars, and the shore. T-T Why don't I see any of these where I live?

You get northern lights there? Lucky. I'd love to see it in person, but no cookie at mere 49° N.
Your photos are awesome as ever, and this goes to all your recent submissions I didn't have a chance to comment on. But I feel there's something missing in them. Substance perhaps, or some underlying story behind the gorgeous, yet somewhat lifeless landscape? I think your earlier works had more of this.
But anyway, while somewhat too smoothened for my taste, I could stare at this and the other aurora picture for hours. Good job!

Well we're only at 46.5° N, but we're also much closer to the magnetic north pole, and so we get to see them more easily than other parts of hte world at a similar latitude. And thank you for your comments.

Yeah, I checked the location only after writing the comment and felt a bit stupid. Oh well. You're welcome anyway.

Thank you. I use a program called Neat Image to do my noise removal ([link] ). For shots like this, I sometimes have to run it through Neat Image a few times to get it looking really clean. To preserve a decent level of sharpness and detail, I will bring the images into Photoshop and paste the noisy image on top of filtered image, and then erase the uniform areas where the noise is most obvious so that the smoother, filtered image shows through. I'll also sometimes use the blur tool on noisy uniform areas as a quick way to smooth them out. As long as most of the detail in the more intricate areas of the photo are preserved, it should still look reasonably sharp overall.
