Such a mischievous scamp that Jinx.
I see what you are going for with this piece, though you may have wanted to brighten the light to get the effect you seem to be going for. The spell light is not as intense as it could be to get that blinding effect. Your dynamic poses are great though, and do an excellent job of guiding the viewers eye.
I also think you did really good with the background here. Lots of detail.

Oh, yes. Jinx is definitely an imp.
Yeah, I was trying a lot of new things with this bit. Well, not exactly "new" things, as most of them were things I'd already tried before, but I was trying new ways of doing them. I use Adobe Illustrator, where most people use Photoshop, so while some people have explained some tricks to me, the exact way to do them is not always entirely cross-applicable. I'll no doubt keep experimenting with it to see how I can improve on the effect.
The poses in this one really come down to the references I found. But I feel I'm validated so long as I didn't trace them. The after-image pose is based on a pic in a "how to draw anime" book I've got that has a section on people getting blown away by explosions. That one was easiest because it was just going to be a silhouette, but I did change the clothes to something a prince would wear. The frog is from Black Cauldron, though to give myself some credit, I did completely change the head to give it a more panicked expression and do a tiny bit of modifying of the overall body to make it coming more towards the viewer. And I had to do quite a bit of modification to the reference I used for Jinx, because Jinx has significantly larger hips and breasts than standard references.
Sooner or later, I hope to graduate from needing to rely on references for poses, but considering I couldn't draw anything just a year ago unless I had an exact image to trace, I think I'm improving at an acceptable rate.

Mmm, I applaud you for using Illustrator, it comes with a lot of limitations you won't find with photoshop, but you will get smooth linework unlike anything I could do with the brush tool.
There's nothing to be ashamed of with using references. Great artists use them all the time to get across the style they wanted for a piece. You just used yours in a way that you felt fit.
My suggestion is when drawing for your references try to imitate the shapes you see before imitating the style of it. Break down what makes that reference work so that way you get something to take with you on the inside.

Yeah, I only use the references to make gesture drawings now, so I know about using shapes. The rest is all a matter of getting better at it.
And yeah, Illustrator is really good for linework. I mainly use Illustrator because I don't have a pen tablet and have to use a mouse and Illustrator's pen-tool works really well with a mouse. I do feel some of its limitations at times, though.

Phew, you do these without a tablet? Man, I remember when I didn't have a tablet, it was a nightmare. But the fact that your stuff is actually really good regardless of if you have a tablet or not is a great sign of your skill.

Yeah, the pen-tool in Illustrator works really good with a mouse if you can learn how to use it.

It's not really night, per say, but I used a semi-transparent black/white gradient overlayed behind the flash image to try and imply the viewer's eyes are still recovering from the bright flash of Jinx's spell and also increase the contrast so that it draws the eye. I'll probably experiment further with this effect to see if I can make it look any better, but I'm pleased with the overall effect.

Yeah. The gradient effect was something that someone suggested in my frog Link pic from a while ago. Thought I'd give it a try. it worked out pretty well. It even hides some of the flaws in the background, which was a nice side-effect.
