it may look harsh.. but at times they are good... instead of keeping a child strapped in a stroller or keeping them in your arms.. let em run around a bit... i see them for saftey as well.. who wants their kid bookin it onto the street?

My mom had me on a leash when I was little. As an adult, I can understand completely. When I was little Ronaldo's age I thought it was hilarious to run away and hide and I HATED my stroller. It was only logical.

Please don't make snap judgments about people who put a leash on their children. It keeps them safe and always in sight. Less able to be kidnapped or wander into traffic or get hurt/lost. Sometimes just watching them isn't enough, you might not catch the child in time. Also, if you have to watch where you are going or have other kids to tend to, you can't alway have your eyes on the child.

I have a little brother that would disappear in a crowd in less than a second if not carried or somehow attached. If you call to him, he completely ignores you, if you run after him, he runs away even more. Of course my parents have only used a wrist strap leash when in Disneyland or a crazy big crowded theme park like that, STILL...it can save the child's life.

I agree with you absolutely. Perhaps it's because my mother kept me on a leash when I was small, but I can't help but empathize with the grandfather: rather than this photo being funny or a portrait of bizarre cruelty, it seems to me it is more of a tender expression of love. It is that love that truly makes this photo worthy of its DD.

Fantastic shot. I really love seeing spontaneous street photos. I have to say that these baby leashes were invented for lazy parents who did not the fulltime responsibility of being a parent

at least the kid won't fall.... but allthought the picture is good it is disturbing that a child is "arrested" like that.

lol it seems so cruel, but think of how the kid is pulling on the leach, they would be gone so fast.

Hahaha! My parents used to have one of those darned things for me, but I learned how to slip out of it.

I really do hate those things though. I can't help but feel like it's like, "Hey, I'm too lazy to spend time with my child and teach them not to run off into dangerous situations, so I'll just buy a leash instead."

Very nice shot

*Since the feature-er and others have decided it's so important to express their dislike of the content - Putting kids on/in leashes is not making them "like a dog" or demeaning in any way, especially when they're that young.
Nobody can snatch your kid when they're strapped to you. Your child can't get too close to the street and accidentally get hit by a car when they're strapped to you. I guess you wouldn't really get it unless you were a caring parent who has seen what bad can happen.
I have never put my daughter in a harness, but I definitely don't bash those who do.*

unessential In reply to natespixie [2007-11-29 06:09:08 +0000 UTC]

I also agree. Leashes for children is sometimes necessary and the safest thing to do for your, maybe "space-case" or even rebellious child, who wanders around with no regard for safety or their proximity to their parents.

SailingBreezes In reply to natespixie [2007-11-28 20:47:24 +0000 UTC]

I agree. I am not against parents or guardians who put leashes on their kids, especially in a large, crowded city like Venice (it's insane around tourist season). My brothers with Aspergers had to be leashed because of their tendency to roam around, and the leash saved one of them from getting hit by a car in Niagra. They're accident-prone, poor boys.

The man doesn't look at all like he's used to having children around. I don't know, it's a combination of the suit and his glasses/head, plus the way he's holding the end of that harness. It's hilarious. It's such a dichotomy.

Great shot.
