Backstory: This world's An has a greatly different story to the main continuity's. She was raised in a poor area of Egypt. She would often work as a thief to support herself. The New Gods Project found her when they were tracking down people descended from royal or magical bloodlines. you can probably guess that An is the descendent of a long line of Priestesses of Anubis. They promised to support her mother if she agreed to help them. At some point they had acquired some of Gamal's godly essence and channeled it into her. Instead of getting the death aspect of Anubis's abilities, she received his powers over shadows and darkness, . After she received her powers, with nothing to tie her to the organization she used her powers and left. In terms of allegiance she is on her side and no one else's, except when Agni is around than she's on Agni's side. She will make things difficult for both sides.
