Description
As a single father, I found it difficult to make a connection with my daughter, Lori. I forced myself to watch Gilmore Girls with her just to spend some time together. She said I had to watch it because my name is Gilbert Moore, and everyone calls me Gil. I enjoyed the rapid-fire dialogue and found myself getting into the show. Lori identified with the daughter character, Rory, and I felt a definite attraction to the mother character, Lorelai.

Sometimes, Lori would toss me one of Rory’s lines from the show and I’d raise the pitch of my voice and respond as Lorelai. It was pure silliness and we both broke down laughing when we tangled our tongues on the snarky banter.

So, when Lori suggested we do a skit for her girl scout troop based on the show, I agreed without asking about the details. It turned out to be a mother/daughter activity, but Lori got permission for me to participate as a single parent. She would play Rory, and she talked me into dressing up as Lorelai. We found a floral print dress and some strappy sandals at the thrift store, and I surprised Lori by buying a wig as well.

Our skit won first prize that evening and all the mothers gushed over what a good sport I was and how convincing my appearance had been. We performed several more times at other events and I got more and more comfortable in my Lorelai role. Eventually, I decided to dress full time and present as a woman. And, as a single mother, I find it much easier now to connect with my daughter.
