Description Pano 4 no tripod

In the very heart of " Paseo del Bosque" ( Wood Area ), La Plata Natural Sciences Museum is located. It is a Neoclassic - Barroque building with ornaments typical of Pre- Columbian Cultures that place it as one of the most outstanding cultural monuments of the city.

Inside the building, you can enjoy an imaginary tour through time since there is a wide range of elements and samples of the evolutionary process of planet Earth.

As you stand opposite the building , you will observe a big flight of steps upheld by two big figures - smilodonths ( tigers from the Pampa which dissappeared 10,000 years ago) considered as letter of introduction of the building.

On the ground, there are some Roman numbers indicating the date in which it was built - 1887- and, just some steps forward there are six Corinthian columns supporting the monumental portal.

Above you, there will be a sculpture related to science - a woman showing planet Earth and the sky, galaxies and stars. On both sides, there are busts of different outstanding persons in Natural Sciences field such as Darwin, Lamark, Humboldt and Cuvier.

You will leave the magic front of the building to enter the Museum with the previous picture kept in your mind. A circular hall welcomes you, with a double height roof . On the first floor, there is a decoration with ornaments that show you the level whereas on the second floor, there is a high vitreaux illustrating the main roof of the building.

The environment is fresh and humid being altered by people's whisperings as they respectfully walk around the place. Typical families as well as young people eager to learn choose this tour which is markedly visual and which takes you at least two hours to visit as you learn about millions of years existence.

Natural Sciences Museum

An information center will welcome you as it provides you with all kinds of bibliography and data to complete the experience.

It is possible to go on the tour with a guide who will make it much more interesting, the choice is yours.

If you choose to start to the right of the hall, you will enter the " Cosmic Observation Room", one of the latest constructions in the Museum which is well known because of the strong colours and intermittent lights. There, you will appreciate through images on a monitor posters and pictures about the evolution of the universe.

The tour continues along a narrow corridor in which different projections with sound tell you about the development of human life - from the beginning of time until current days. Texts are precise and explanatory for kids and grown ups to enjoy and understand.

You will leave the place to enter the " Paleontology Room" in which you will travel millions of years back in time.

Natural Sciences Museum

In front of you, there will be samples of the first manifestations of life. You will learn how they spreaded and how they integrated to man. There are original samples of mammals, spectacular dinosaurs from the Mesozoic Era and fossile plants.

You can also appreciate a copy of the biggest spider ever found being one of the favourite stops for kids.

The show is really complete and varied , there are six rooms intended for Paleontology surrounding La Plata Museum which must be visited opposite clockwise direction.

Next, to have a break in your tour, you will come into the cafeteria where you can have something to eat or drink and coment on what you have already seen, sharing with other visitors your experiences as you eat your snack.

Then, you will leave this small area with a few tables and chairs to enter the “Temporary Show Room”, used by collectionists to show varied elements which are a joy to behold.

Natural Sciences Museum

Later, you will go to the “Zoology Room”, which is another big attraction. Five rooms have been intended for you to appreciate the great variety of current animal forms. They are classified in groups providing you with the chance of watching them, feeling them and making the most of them to enrich your knowledge.

Animal life appears from the simplest samples ( cellular ones ) to the most complex organisms ( vertebrates ). The most outstanding one is the skull of a gigantic blue whale that occupies the whole lengh of the room ceiling and which is impossible to forget.

It is a good idea to stop here before entering “Mineralogy and Petrography Room”, which is right there, since the greatness of what you have already seen may decrease your attention here and may not let you take as much profit as you can of all the richness of this room.

There, you will come into different types of minerals , rocks and manuscripts that tell you about their procedence and origin. These are completed by maps to locate geologic deposits which highlight the hidden richness of the heart of Argentina land.

You are about to finish up the inner tour and go back to the central hall after you end the "circular" rich experience at the museum. Only the " Egyptian( Aksha) Room" is left.

Inside it, you will observe a reconstruction of Aksha Temple which is 3,200 years old and made of material taken from diggings made in Sudán by a mission of Argentinian archaeologists.

Natural Sciences Museum

Once again in the central hall, you will go up the stairs which are opposite the entrance of the building. The stairs split to both sides and start showing you guards and images with native figures which are symbols of American people and cultures leading you to the first floor.

Straight, to your left and right, there are two corridors that link the two remaining rooms of this tour.

Always to your right, you will reach the " Ethnography Room " which is full of objects that belonged to different native cultures. A group of canoes and the cuirass of a Tehuelche Cacique located at the center of the room are really valuable from the historical point of view.

Only the " Biologic Anthropology Room " is left, very near you. There, you will find skeletons and skulls, as well as life styles and exotic rituals of native cultures. Together with them, there are Egyptian mummies and desiccated corpses which are worldwide valuable completing the picture.

You will return to the hall and go to your left to observe the interior of " Latin American Archaeology Room"- area that shows you the development of American Cultures from the year 12,000 B.C. to the arrival of Spanish people to America. The most valuable objects are made of Perú ceramics, weaves and other designs and outstand in the showcases.

Natural Sciences Museum

Before finishing the tour, you must visit the " Argentinian Northwest Archaeology Room". There, you will recall old cultures, places and life styles typical of periods in which agriculture and pottery had priority.

At last, you will go to the " Botanical Room". The showcases full of innumeral green forms almost dazzle you with their magic. The flora, main protagonist , enchants you as you discover its evolution through history- fungus, algae, roots, seeds and exotic plants are the last to speak.
