Very good work! His skin and wrinkles are VERY believable!
I find it interesting to see how you did his eyes, as I have a photo here waiting to be drawn where the eyes are in the shadow like that. You just showed me that what I'm dreading now cΓ‘n be done!

Thank you!!
Not the first drawing with eyes in shadow, actually theres at least one I can remember with one eye in more shadows (or less light...) than the other... think its christian bale one. As long as you stick to what you see shouldnt be a problem at all

I have a refernce of a good friend's granny here to draw. It is a rather good and sharp picture, but with the eyes completely in the shadow... My friend says her eyes were light-grey, but I can't even see the whites of her eyes, let alone her eye-colour! This will take some creative measures no doubt.

I personally believe that to draw realistic portraits all you need to do is copy, literally, copy, if you cant see something, you will not draw it. It sounds pretty bad, but so far it has been the difference between a good drawing and a very realistic drawing, at least in my honest opinion... In any case, please send me a note with a link to the result out of this reference, Im very very curious to see it

I agree, but just feel unsure about it. The eyes are such an important part of capturing a person's personality, that I'm afraid I'll miss that bit...
I'll most definitely show you the ref once this is done.

I love wrinkly faces, leonard nimoy is awesome.
the skin definition and hair is absolutely perfect, so realistic.
I would take a sharp charcoal pencil and just put a tiny bit more detail in the iris, teeny tiny few lines would make the whole picture even more mind blowing than it already is.

th3blackhalo In reply to Amore-Viola [2012-01-17 07:26:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so very much

I pile up so many layers of graphite pencil and ink that I cant really get deep black almost ever, you tempt me to use charcoal on top of all that and see what it does, none the less, I stopped using charcoal cos of how floury it is...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amore-Viola In reply to th3blackhalo [2012-01-18 00:50:10 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah actually charcoal just wouldn't take, it would just sit on top and slide off! doh!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

th3blackhalo In reply to Amore-Viola [2012-01-18 16:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Suspected so... plus pencils I use have a cold tone of gray into the black, while most of charcoal I have been able to use had a very warm one... its kinda weird to have cold and warm blacks together, if you asked me why I wouldnt know, but it just feels/looks somewhat wrong...
