Description Asrie Sword Maidens.

5'3" - 5'6"

Although they're referred to as Sword or Shield maidens sometimes, you rarely see them actually carrying a sword. That's because Themans use weapons primarily for hunting and protecting themselves from animals and wild beasts. Generally, drawing a weapon on another Theman is strictly forbidden by all tribes, even the savage Orka, due to a mandate from their Queens. Other than hunting, they will usually only carry weapons when pursuing a Theman who has broken that law, or when they go to war.

The Asrie are the least aggressive of the Theman tribes, and generally welcome travellers into their land. Of course, should they be threatened every Asrie will fight until she can't fight anymore to protect her sisters. For a long time in their early history they never really had to defend themselves from anyone. They shared their land with some nomadic tribes, and aside from the odd minor skirmish, they all lived quite peacefully. However, as they continued to expand and establish new cities, it was inevitable that they would eventually come into contact with other more aggressive tribes.

Their longest running conflict is with the Vanri; vampiric mutants who came together and established a kingdom in the ice wastes to the south. The Vanri captured many Asrie and made them into Thralls. Nowadays, it seems the Vanri are somehow 'breeding' new slaves and have no need to capture Asrie anymore. Even so, there still exists much hostility between them.

A misunderstanding led to a war with the Valkyr, a race of honourable warrior women from the south west. The Asrie suffered heavy losses, but eventually their Princess was able to apologise for the misunderstanding and, impressed by their courage, the Valkyr are now allies. The Asrie trade them food and medicine and in return the Valkyr provide them with much needed muscle in their fights with the Vanri and the Orka - savage barbarians from the north east who regularly gather in large numbers to raid other lands.

Their most recent conflict has been with the Rysans from, across the sea to the north. Only recently, the Rysir Empire has exploded in size, conquering most of the smaller tribes around them. The Asrie recently fought them for control over an island chain inbetween their lands, and lost badly. Afterwards, Asrie morale was low; after suffering defeat after defeat, they were desperate for a victory. So, they went to war with the Eremi for control of another island. But, after months of bitter back and forth fighting, the Asrie were worn down, beaten, and finally wiped out.

The truth of the matter is that the Asrie are not warriors. There are very few full time fighters in their number. They usually rotate between serving as guards and other jobs. An Asrie who is a doctor, for example, will do that for eight months of the year and serve as a guard for the rest (although of course her doctoring skills will come in useful in battle). Not necessarily divided exactly like that; it depends on the circumstances and there are exceptions, such as priestesses who take care of the young, or the Shadow Guard. On the plus side, since every Asrie has some experience they can summon huge armies when needed. While plenty of others have superior soldiers, they know that to completely conquer the Asrie would be a very long, gruelling process as each and every Asrie will fight to the last for every street.
