Oh, my goodness, this is sooo damn old!!
But it's the only mermaid character I've ever created, so the devil may care about how the proportions look like - I'll make a re-design of them both if I have the right feeling for it ... oh, but Fin will probably look different then due to his mutant DNA ...

And the title is a bit weird, not?
Okay, so to explain it:
A "Three Strikes Project" is something existing in some German schools to make students aware of three of the most poisonous diseases in our society - intolerance/racism, animal cruelty/testing and wastefulness/environmental pollution.
This means, students come together in groups and try to create something that stays in mind - in this case a collage made of recycled materials [strike one!] with a story!

About the characters:
Kayla had originally the full name "Chaila Aquana Saméga", but she goes by "Kay" now, as the original name was a group decision of my classmates ... and Aquana is a German Pokémon name .
She and her best friend/pet-friend Fin live in an oceanic empire called "Sametania" ('cause in those days I was more adept at learning Japanese than today). In this empire the dominant race of sea people (mermaids/mermen) are half-sharks - such as Kayla's father, the emperor Saméga II who tries to keep peace between all tribes and supports the mingling among them [strike two!]; her mother was half a parrotfish (explains the colorful looks of her daughter) and died when giving birth to her only child. This, however, made Kayla's father overprotective and -caring, so the precious princess had to spend her childhood completely inside the palace.
However, one day she took her chance to get out at night and explore the open sea on her own ... till she found a baby tiger shark whose dorsal fin had been bitten off. She took him home as fast as she could swim and woke her uncle, the empire's top scientist, who (of course) abused this rightful reason to play God and implant DNA material from every shark species of their world into the little one's body to create a perfect super-shark [strike three!] ...

Now the loyal, cheerful and trusting little Fin changes his natural behaviour/abilities and physical appearance randomly from time to time within his growing process, as he's still not an adult ...
And Kay studies medicine to become an all-round doc for any kind of living being. Her personality is meant to be a 4th strike besides the project itself, since she's a strong female character, a hobby-gunner when on solid ground and - love it or hate it - a confirmed lesbian.
(Gosh, how I miss those days as you could draw a revolver for school without getting a meeting with a psychologist - now you can't even draw Ticci Toby at work without causing panic all around ...)

But wait ... on solid ground? - Yep, in this world are a few islands (no complete continents) existing and ALL people are sea people, but as soon as their scales are dry, their fin tails split automaticallt into two separate legs and as they have both, lungs and gills, they can just switch from one to another way of breathing.
