See, the thing about Matt is that, for the short amount of time he was present in both the manga and the anime, he made for a really interesting character.
Not to say that he was pivotal to the plot, but his existence was important - he created the diversion that allowed Mello to kidnap Takada and got killed doing so. This brings me to my second point which is that his relationship with Mello (whether or not they were actually lovers) was unlike any other in the series; Matt was not only a genuine friend to Mello, someone that he saw as an equal, but he ended giving up his own life for Mello. That speaks volumes about his character.
Then there's his other traits, like his outfit (which is pretty unique), his goggles. His obsession with video games is something a lot of people can identify with, and the same thing goes for his dislike of going outside. His smartass comments even in the face of danger ("Since when were the Japanese allowed to carry such big guns?"), his badass car, his chain-smoking and his laidback attitude all make for a pretty awesome character. His ambiguity also makes good for fanartists because it allows for a lot of broad interpretations.
Of course, he is good-looking and was drawn to be that way, and there are obviously girls who'll go crazy over him for that reason alone, but doesn't that apply to all handsome guys?
Just my two cents since I feel like people can be pretty dismissive of Matt because of the fangirls!
