Description
Burg Rheinstein was originally built in 900 AD as a customs post in the German Empire and was later used to defend the Mainz territory from robber knights in the 13th century. As the years passed, little effort was made to continue its upkeep, and by 1572 the castle was falling into ruin. Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig of Prussia (wow what a name) purchased the ruins in 1823 and had it rebuilt under the supervision of the renowned architect Claudius von Lassaulx. It is now privately owned by the Hecher family, and over the years many efforts have been made to restore the castle to its former glory in order to awake this sleeping beauty.
