Description

There are times when fate just wants to kick me in the nuts. Usually this involves train shows. Sometimes, theres an item there I wanna get but don't have the funds for. In the past, it was most often me forgetting about going to the show or being preoccupied by some other family event that took place. Now it seems like her newest form of torture is listing all the good shit AFTER spending a nice sum at a train show.

But not this time. This time I decided to say "up yours!" to fate and caved on another personal top teir wishlist item.

This is the Roundhouse 1894 Sunset Limited. A four car set depicting the premier Southern Pacific train in its earliest conception. The Sunset Limited was inaugurated that year and continues to operate today under Amtrak, the longest running passenger train to-date in the United States. The models are Roundhouse's 80' Palace Car kits, of which there is a Baggage-Club, a 7-2 Sleeping Car, a Dining Car and a 10 section observation. All of the cars are designed to look like wood cars but are made of plastic. There is a legitimate (and more accurate) wooden Sunset Limited made by Westwood but that is a set I will probably never obtain due to rarity, price and its complex assembly.

This set came to my attention for a very unqiue reason. I met a friend online who has his own 1894 Sunset Limited, however his is custom made using hand-applied gold trim, beautifully done interiors and a longer consist of 6 cars as opposed to the Roundhouse 4. At the helm of his train was the IHC SP 4-4-0 No. 260. An inaccurate model for the train but oddly fitting for the Palace cars. It was there I found out about the IHC 4-4-0, of which I obtained myself after some time hunting online, and then I found out about the official set. I decided to go for the official set because I didn't have the skills (or patience) for hand painted gold trim. That...was a problem, because it seemed like information about this set just didn't seem to exist. The few times I found out about it, NO ONE seemed to know or even bother making a note of it. So I waited, and waited, and waited. Some listings popped up, giving me the helpful information, but they still seemed to be out of my grasp.

Not anymore. I was not going to let the most recent take on this set evade me this time! Here is the Observation Car "El Real." The SKU is 68201. On the REAL Sunset Limited, this actually never existed. The dining car was actually the "observation" car of the train. It will eventually be constructed and include an interior, metal wheelsets and Kadee couplers.
