Even though the movie is totally historically inaccurate I like the way Teutonic knights were depicted there. By the way, it had nothing to do with ice. The battleΒ supposedlyΒ had happened near a lake but it is quite doubtful that someone would fight on ice in April because both sides would easily drown. So Nevski had won because of usual numerical superiority. Also, Teutons hadn't captured Pskov by force - townsfolk just let them in, hence there was no "genocide". Anyways the movie is excellent even though it is merely total Soviet anti-NS propaganda.

i just finished a book on the black death, and another about dualist religions from antiquity to the cathar heresy. just got one called " the modulated scream: pain in late medieval culture" about the various interpretations and purposes of pain in that climate- like torture and martyrs. very very cool book.

The last one you mentioned seems especially interesting. My range of knowledge on the subject is limited, as I have really only looked at the artwork, so I'm sure you know much more about it than I do. But it is such an interesting period, and my interest in it has been growing gradually.

well, if you ever need book recommendations on that, i'm a former librarian with a particular interest in that period...muahahaha!

Librarian? I am jealous. That takes some hefty training, doesn't it? To be fair, I would like to be able to offer you recommendations based upon my former work, but I have had some quite useless jobs in my time, aha.

Hm, I think that I currently have a similar position in the mortuary field that you had in the library field. I assist a mortician, sometimes retrieving bodies and sometimes assisting in the embalming room where needed, though I am not allowed to embalm, obviously, as I have no degree.

actually, that's pretty awesome. i considered going into that field, actually- i still collect mourning jewelry and photos and suchlike. so actually, i'd probably be way more interested in picking your brain than you realize, haha!

It sounds like a nice collection. People don't mourn the way the used to. I only plan on staying in this field for as long as I am in this (small) city. I hope to find a more lively job elsewhere. Though honestly I have thought of working in a crematory elsewhere. The requirements are much less, and I wouldn't have to come into contact with the deceased's loved ones.

yes, my friend quit removals and mortuary science because of the family of the deceased as well. i imagine it can be exhausting.

That makes quite a lot of sense to me. If you don't distance yourself from it all it can be overwhelming.

Oh, I could tell you about some new and interesting stenches that are viscous and stick to everything. Sometimes I can still smell it after a shower. Or maybe that is just imagination. The chemicals, too, have a very potent aroma.

Aha. I have only thrown up once or twice, but that was just in my mouth. I do end up gagging a whole lot, but it's not the chemicals - it's the more human aromas that do it. People start to decompose much faster than might be expected, and there are all sorts of things that go along with that. But a hazmat helmet is fancy! I only have those cheap little masks that cover my mouth and nose. Though there is some heavy duty looking stuff lying around in there in case of a contagious case, though I don't think i'd be allowed in there if that happened. I would gladly tell a horror story, but in private note if you'd like. I would feel bad putting anything specific here, as this is public, even if the parties are anonymous.

hah! sure thing. and i can't even imagine what a full-grown human smells like when it gets a little ripe...if it's anywhere as bad a a roadkill deer, i wouldn't even be able to get within ten feet..
