The style of the uniform is Russian Civil War era, but it was not red. There is a reference book, though, that shows Trotsky's train guard wearing red leather from head to toe [link] . This particular uniform is red simply because I made it that way, though.

I'm more of an Ushanka fan myself, but the Budenovka looks very military.

I agree - a ushanka is better, and more utilitarian. I often draw Budenovkas due to their association with the early Red Army, despite their being inferior technically to other hats.
