Description Just a quick test for the actual colours prevailing in the Valiard Mansion itself. The challenge I've set for myself in this piece is to make a sort of "dark daytime". I really want the Mansion to have its own day/night cycles running by its own rules. I'm fond of mustard yellows for daytime along with the Italian Lady Vittoria's olive skin.


Then maybe all the colder hues at nighttime, like in the Ruth/Joshua thumbnail pic below. Like, I want nighttime to be brighter than daytime in a way. Dumb idea? Or maybe just bad execution. Ah, I'm having fun!

Oh, no, don't worry! I don't take it as a reproach at all. It's SO important for me to know when any of my characters look similar to others' characters.


I am COMPLETELY aware her dress looks like Esmeralda's at least! I designed it months ago, not realizing it then, and now I've drawn my character again this past week or so, I was like, "Oh, crap, Ez, what have you DONE?" But I don't have the time to do any huge redesigns on her now, so I just coloured her as is. BUT YES! Yes, yes, yes, a redesign is definitely in order! It's just I'm looking for a dress design that seems like it can be "dressed up", i.e. conservative, but also restyled in a way that is looks a tattered and bareβ€”so I thought that some buttons that can loosen into the current style would be the perfect solution. Meanwhile, ESMERALDA OMG!!! No worries!

I love the idea of daytime being brighter than nighttime inside the mansion. I think it really adds to the atmosphere

wow.... I didn't know she had dark hair. I like it and it suits her, but I never would have guessed she was a brunette.


I like your idea with the night/ day settings, it makes for an interesting composition. Changing the colors can really help set a mood. If someone's dying, you don't want them to be in a sunny valley of flowers.

Yeah, she's Italian exactly because I wanna drift away from constantly drawing light-featured British girls haha! she's supposed to have black hair but ah, I just detest making things black or grey. So dull... Even though it ups the drama I DON'T CARE!!!

Yes, Ruth is English, actually. But all my Valiard characters so far are either British or Irish, excepting Lady Vittoria and my pirate character, Arina. I'm really keen to create more characters from other nationalitiesβ€”anything non-European if I can help it!


And naw, my portfolio's gonna have as little Valiard in it as possible. I've got three or four other properties I can explore.

I know this one Disney artist that did a take on an animated Wicked as his portfolio. He had all these character designs for people like Galinda, Elphaba, and Fiyero and he had a few other things. It turned out really cool and interesting. Will you be posting your portfolio as you go?

I love the thin wisps of lighter color you put in her hair. Adds that extra dimensionality you always seem to be able to get into your pieces so well. And I like the idea of it being lighter during the nighttime. I don't really get it, either, at least not in a way that I could explain it with words, but I really get it at the same time.Β
