AHHHHH! Attack of the sketch dumps!!!
I don't always have time to scan everything. The drawings just pile up haha! 
Just some drawings of Ruth I did over the past two months or so.
Trying to do more and more sequential pics to practise my character consistency. So there's Ruth reacting to some bad news, being teased by Gangfield, trying to explain something in her ball gown... stuff like that.
Also some new dress designs for a date scene. A date with whom? Ha! No spoilers! 
Bottom right is 17-year-old Ruth at the train station. What happened? Why is she holding a suitcase? Could it have something to do with Theodore? Hmmmmm!

I really like that expression near the bottom where Ruth is on the balcony with Dennis and the frog. I don't know why that is I just think it's funny.

I love all the Ruth expressions in the middle. Though maybe I like her frustrated, "this could not get any worse" look in the first drawing on the top left! X3 The way her brow is furrowed, the almost-scowl on her lips, and especially how she's sunk down against the arm of the chair and not just leaning on her hand, but covering her face from how embarrassed/frustrated/disgusted with the situation is awesome. You do an amazing job communicating not just Ruth's mood, but the mood and feel of the entire scene through her pose and expression.
I love the intense expressions on that Theodore/Ruth sketch next to her. They're wide eyes say so much, and Ruth's face has this really strong look of shock, too.
I like that sketch of Ruth with her arms up where she looks exasperated. I love how strong the acting is in how her arms are posed -- the hand at her temple communicates her frustration, along with the furrow on her brow and her expression itself. Then the other hand is kinda swung out to show how she's exasperated -- I love how you can just feel the frustrated energy as she seems to be saying, "Really? Come on, guys! Get it together!" But, y'know. In a more polite, Victorian way. XP
That silly, exaggerated, shy/cutesy smirk is adorable and fun. And I love the really, REALLY strong, lively, high-impact expressions all throughout this set. I love how you capture the strongest moments, the most potent expressions and emotions, like the key frames, to make her expressions have the most impact.
I love that "brain is broken -- cannot process what I see" face on the next to last line. I love her her shoulders are slumped, how her lips are closed tightly in this blank, goofy expression, and how there's this frozen look of terror in her eyes. Poor Ruth...because seeing her thrown for such a loop makes me smile and laugh inside. XD
There's so much awesome in all of these sketches, I could probably go on and gush over all of them. They're so ALIVE, so animated and amazing. I love it.

Nice work! The hands can be a bit wonky at times (especially these two ), but that's just because they're hands. You're forgiven.
By far my favorite Ruth in this collection is the one with Dennis and the frog. I have no idea why, but it feels like it comes straight out of a Pixar or Dreamworks movie!

I just love how you draw Ruth! She has so much expression that you can just FEEL what she's feeling! I know I do

I make stuff up ALL the time like an insano blind bat. But then I make my lines really dark and thick to make people see how sure I am of what I've made up, then they go with the flow because "Hey, if she's so sure about it, then that implausible pose over there MUST be, in actuality, completely possible!"
That's the theory, anyway.
I'm so glad you like these! I've been working super hard on gestures and expressions this past while, more so than anything else.

The last thing I wanted to do was make a traditionally graceful/pretty type female lead. I mean those can be great, but ah, let them MOVE and DO THINGS and BE SILLY!!!

Wow, this is actually really nice for a sketch dump! Can I ask you, how do you get the poses to look so fluid? I've been trying lately to make my characters look less stiff, like they're toys. I'd really appreciate any advice you could give!

Well, there are some standard pointers for fluidity. Avoid parallel and perpendicular lines in the pose like the plague. Symmetry is the enemy. Never draw anything from the flat front angle. Things like that. YAWN, amirite?
I've found the secret to fluidity is to draw fluidly. I draw fast and more with my arm than my wrist. Let go and trust your instincts. The result will be more natural than chaotic (though it does get chaotic sometimes, don't get me wrong, but that's what your eraser is for 
It's good to know your anatomy, but as soon as you know the rules well enough, it's time to break them. Some artists draw from the inside outβstick figure, then muscles, then skin, then clothes. I've taken to drawing from the outside, in. I draw the clothes and outer layers first, then when I like the pose, I go deeper and refine the pose, drawing in the anatomy afterwards only if it looks wonky. If it looks passable, I leave it.
You're free to check out one of my earlier dumps, where I left a lot of things very rough. --->[link] <--- Look especially at the very bottom set of poses. That is all I usually draw as far as my planning goes. I sometimes draw a ball joint for the shoulder and sticks for the arms, but the rest of the time, I just go with the flow.

Some of what you said I have heard before, but honestly hearing it from more than one person really shows that it seems to work, so it still helps!
The only thing that doesn't work for me is the stick figures, because I feel like when I use them they make my characters look like one of these little buggers [link] (I'd never use one because I feel like that'd make it even worse!).
Right now I'm working on using gesture sketches (?) to start my drawings, and I've also been using a lot of photo references lately, which also seem to be a big help.

Your design for her is just perfect. She looks so beautiful and spunky and very, very original. She doesn't look a THING like Jane Porter. Nothin'. Nada. Not at all.
The series where she is reacting to bad news is ESPECIALLY stunning. I just keep looking because she's so pretty! Her hair, her expression, her posture--everything. Excellent job!

URRRGGH! Yes the inevitable Jane Porter comparison.
I do know that when people play the "totally reminds me of" game, they mean it as a compliment nine out of ten times. The character is invoking a good response from the viewer, not a critical response, and what more can an artist ask for?
Despite this, Ruth is only wearing her hair up and wearing a bustle for the first 10% of the story.
