Description UPDATE - JULY 2013
Hey, people! Just letting everyone know this is my character, Ruth Rosewood's old design. A lot has changed since I've uploaded this, but I still quite like a lot of the sketches here, so I'm keeping it up. Thanks for everyone's amazing input! You make it SO worth it for me to draw and write every day!!!!

Ruth's new design can be found here:

I've removed the original comment that was here because it rambled on about bits of the story that have changed completely. However, if you want to find out more about this character or the story she's from, I'm posting new chapters monthly and you can start reading here:

THANK YOU, GUYS!!

The hair reminds me of Ariel's a little bit. I really like Ruth, she is an excellent character!

I know you're tired of hearing from me by now haha, but how DO you get your lines so crisp and perfect?!? It's like you do no outline sketching and just make perfect lineart. Do you sketch and then trace over your pieces?? HOW ARE THESE MASTERPIECES CREATED? Inquiring minds must know! :amazed:

Inquiring minds will get a simple answer this time: putty eraser!

I just draw my guidelines super lightly, press harder as I finalize the lines, sweep my putty eraser over it and voila! The final lines are all that remain! EASY!

HUG!!

I definitely find her appealing. There's something about her hair that makes me pause a little, if I'm doing a critique, but I'm not sure what it is... It could be the part that's throwing me off? Or its volume? I don't know, because I like a nice thick head o' hair, and I do really like her look overall.

No, no, no, I see what you mean! I'm still working on her hair, something about it throws me off, too. Hrrmmmm! I dunno what it is either. It's one of the reasons I'm forcing myself to draw her more now, because I need to catch her at every angle to diagnose the hair problem!

Thanks for your honesty! I'll keep working hard on it!

You are welcome! I was thinking maybe just a few more lines to indicate texture and detail and direction might solve the problem, instead of making it look like a big block mass of hair? Just an idea, a few lines sometimes make all the difference. Again, great job!

I found her to be likeable before I even made it to your comments! She reminds me of my favorite Disney film, The Little Mermaid.

I think that you should work for Disney I mean, seriously, your style is really similar to Glen Keane. In case you don't know who he is, he helped make the Disney movies The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, real awesome animator. You'd be perfect for that sort of thing!

Love those expressions! Ruth is sooo pretty!

Something I like about how you draw girls is how you draw lips. You draw them where they can be seen, but you also keep them subtle and understated. I like that you can achieve that "feminine" look to her lips without exaggerating them too much.

I love how you use her eyes to communicate her emotions. I was going to say, "especially in the first few sketches," but then I keep scrolling down and I can't really say it's just in a few -- it's in all of the sketches that you use eyes to bring her to life. I do like the one at the top in the middle, with how she's looking to the side, happily and pleasantly surprised at someone getting her attention. Her eyes look great looking to the side, and her smile is adorable.

But I also like the sketch below, where her eyes are narrowed. She's quite perturbed! And to the left of that one, her raised-eyebrow-head-cocked-to-the-side look is soooo cute! And the sketches below that row -- the one where she's slowly, moodily turning towards us! Love the atmosphere and mood and pacing her expression sets! And the one to left of that, where's kinda hugging herself with her eyes closed, trying to comfort herself or reacting/remembering a warm moment, trying to relish it again now that it's gone and far away.

All of the sketches are gorgeous. I know you wanted some honest critique, and less flowery praise, but looking critically, especially at this set of sketches, I don't really see anything jumping out that I would point out as negative. Everything looks really solid! I'm in awe -- the way you infuse life into your characters is actually quite inspiring.

I also like that little figure proportions chart you have there. I don't know if you already have one up somewhere, but I'd find it fascinating to see a figure tutorial or reference done by you -- I always like how your figures look so balance and natural, how the shapes all feel lifelike and organic, all the while maintaining a great animated feel. I don't mean to beg you for a tutorial or anything; I just really find the way you draw figures to be useful and interesting to look at from a perspective of studying figure drawing.

Seriously, I LOVE YOUR COMMENTS!!! Omigosh, you have no idea how it helps me to read your advice and read about what you think I'm doing right. It's sometimes more valuable to know your strengths than to be hammered on the head with your weaknesses, and you really, truly give me the motivation to keep going! THANK YOU!

I'm so glad you like the way I draw her lips. I've really been playing around with her lips' masses, so it's good to know I've struck a good balance!

Other than that, just many more thank you's!!! I'll keep working hard, I promise!!!!

Here's my 1 cents worth - I think she is lovely and very appealing - you have managed to capture something in her face that is very engaging and open. She looks like a lady - but willing to be tough if she needs to be. And despite the Disney style she is unique. I love her hair too.

You have had some awesome advice from people - and I agree - just write away and draw her into your writing! You already have an awesome foundation - I'd read it.

I think her design is quite like able as a character and your style is great. (I just went to a panel with people who do concept art for video games and they say just keep drawing...a lot and what ever is your style is your style.) Maybe you need to draw more from life. You don't have to go to a class just draw other students in class and it will help your art. And to remove Jane comparisons, maybe make her hair red? Other wise it is spot on! and if you need beta readers......(raises hand).

The-Ez In reply to Starstoryteller [2012-09-03 05:50:38 +0000 UTC]

Omigosh, I completely agree with you 100%!!! I really, really need to get some life drawing in. It's ridiculous how many times I get stuck and just know I'd be able to do it if I did more studies. My drawings are becoming flatter by the day, it's quite embarrassing.

I haven't been able to come to terms with the whole drawing-random-civilians scenario, though. I think that's far too creepy. I'd rather just keep my eye out for a class when my holidays roll in. Because, seriously, this is getting ridiculous. It's funny you're mentioning this, because it's started to bother me very recently! COINKYDINK!

As for the Jane Porter comparison, I'm not very worried about that. The fashions were very rigid in the mid to late 1800's, so it's really a case of the characters' silhouettes being very similar in addition to the drawing styles nearly matching. I see the comparison as a compliment, to be honest. It means I'm doing something right.

Thanks so much for the advice! You're awesome! And thanks so much for offering to read my work. It means so much to me! I'll totally take you up on that offer!

Don't worry I don't think peeps will mind you drawing them. But if it does bother you just ask to draw friends will they are gaming or studding or just hanging out. It would be just cheaper then taking a class XD. Now I have to start drawing more people too.

She looks great! I feel like having all three of the characters in one image would help express what you want out of them. Having her look likeable is good, but I'm the kind of guy who loves theming, so making sure she and the two gents are distinct, and their designs, expressions, and everything reflect who they are and what they stand for are represented by them is most important to me.

She looks absolutely lovely, by the way.

Very nice! Btw, on my comment about inking and colouring.. you don't HAVE to ink! Ben and I both like your pencils. There's no law that says you have to have bold single lines/ink.

Thank you so much for the advice! And thank Ben for me, too! Haha! I mean if anyone would know about comics, it's you guys!

That's my inking problem solved!

I'm just still trying to find an efficient way to do backgrounds. At the moment I just paint them in Photoshop, but it's very much a trial and error thing, so it takes a while. I only wish I had more time to experiment, but ah, the Law, she is keeping me busy.

Thanks again!

dwuff In reply to The-Ez [2012-09-04 18:05:13 +0000 UTC]

It might help you to draw a bunch of backgrounds from reference, but do speedpaintings. Only allow yourself an hour per background, or something like that. And just do a whole bunch, one a day maybe if you get time. And read background tutorials, those are awesome. As you go along you'll see what works for you and what doesn't. But yes, as you say you've got killer classes! Sorry bout that. ;( I don't envy your situation! (Although I might envy your salary one day. )
