The hair reminds me of Ariel's a little bit. I really like Ruth, she is an excellent character!

I definitely find her appealing. There's something about her hair that makes me pause a little, if I'm doing a critique, but I'm not sure what it is... It could be the part that's throwing me off? Or its volume? I don't know, because I like a nice thick head o' hair, and I do really like her look overall.

You are welcome! I was thinking maybe just a few more lines to indicate texture and detail and direction might solve the problem, instead of making it look like a big block mass of hair? Just an idea, a few lines sometimes make all the difference. Again, great job!

I found her to be likeable before I even made it to your comments! She reminds me of my favorite Disney film, The Little Mermaid.

Love those expressions! Ruth is sooo pretty!
Something I like about how you draw girls is how you draw lips. You draw them where they can be seen, but you also keep them subtle and understated. I like that you can achieve that "feminine" look to her lips without exaggerating them too much.
I love how you use her eyes to communicate her emotions. I was going to say, "especially in the first few sketches," but then I keep scrolling down and I can't really say it's just in a few -- it's in all of the sketches that you use eyes to bring her to life. I do like the one at the top in the middle, with how she's looking to the side, happily and pleasantly surprised at someone getting her attention. Her eyes look great looking to the side, and her smile is adorable.
But I also like the sketch below, where her eyes are narrowed. She's quite perturbed! And to the left of that one, her raised-eyebrow-head-cocked-to-the-side look is soooo cute! And the sketches below that row -- the one where she's slowly, moodily turning towards us! Love the atmosphere and mood and pacing her expression sets! And the one to left of that, where's kinda hugging herself with her eyes closed, trying to comfort herself or reacting/remembering a warm moment, trying to relish it again now that it's gone and far away.
All of the sketches are gorgeous. I know you wanted some honest critique, and less flowery praise, but looking critically, especially at this set of sketches, I don't really see anything jumping out that I would point out as negative. Everything looks really solid! I'm in awe -- the way you infuse life into your characters is actually quite inspiring.
I also like that little figure proportions chart you have there. I don't know if you already have one up somewhere, but I'd find it fascinating to see a figure tutorial or reference done by you -- I always like how your figures look so balance and natural, how the shapes all feel lifelike and organic, all the while maintaining a great animated feel. I don't mean to beg you for a tutorial or anything; I just really find the way you draw figures to be useful and interesting to look at from a perspective of studying figure drawing.

I think her design is quite like able as a character and your style is great. (I just went to a panel with people who do concept art for video games and they say just keep drawing...a lot and what ever is your style is your style.) Maybe you need to draw more from life. You don't have to go to a class just draw other students in class and it will help your art. And to remove Jane comparisons, maybe make her hair red? Other wise it is spot on! and if you need beta readers......(raises hand).

Omigosh, I completely agree with you 100%!!! I really, really need to get some life drawing in. It's ridiculous how many times I get stuck and just know I'd be able to do it if I did more studies. My drawings are becoming flatter by the day, it's quite embarrassing.
I haven't been able to come to terms with the whole drawing-random-civilians scenario, though. I think that's far too creepy. I'd rather just keep my eye out for a class when my holidays roll in. Because, seriously, this is getting ridiculous. It's funny you're mentioning this, because it's started to bother me very recently! COINKYDINK!
As for the Jane Porter comparison, I'm not very worried about that. The fashions were very rigid in the mid to late 1800's, so it's really a case of the characters' silhouettes being very similar in addition to the drawing styles nearly matching. I see the comparison as a compliment, to be honest. It means I'm doing something right.
Thanks so much for the advice! You're awesome! And thanks so much for offering to read my work. It means so much to me! I'll totally take you up on that offer!

She looks great! I feel like having all three of the characters in one image would help express what you want out of them. Having her look likeable is good, but I'm the kind of guy who loves theming, so making sure she and the two gents are distinct, and their designs, expressions, and everything reflect who they are and what they stand for are represented by them is most important to me.
She looks absolutely lovely, by the way.

Seriously, I wouldn't be worried. I fell in love with the character as soon as I looked over these sketches, and already want to see/know more about her. Really nice work!

She's absolutely beautiful, really. There's so much emotion in these drawings and she reminds me of Jane Porter a bit. <3
