Australian Warmblood Futurity: Canberra Spectacular
KhC Nyoorlam
Futurity Ticket #142
Mina Evans , 24 years old
Halter

Mina had never really believed in the concept of a “quirky” horse – the idea that a horse’s bad behaviour was just because of personality, rather than pain, confusion or bad handling. However, Nyoor had taken it upon herself to challenge that aspect of Mina’s horsemanship – plus many, many other aspects of it. She was a lovely filly, top quality with phenomenal movement and presence. But, she was truly weird. Mina had worked with plenty horses who were a bit aloof, not particularly keen on fuss or doting attention. But Nyoor was different – she had an opinion about it. She would slowly lose her patience, before starting to cycle through bad behaviour. Positive reinforcement had worked to improve her attitude, but still she made it clear that she was sick of being fussed over, and ignoring her communication would result in escalating. A less horseman might have tried to punish the behaviour out of her, but Mina liked a communicative horse rather than a shut down one.

What Mina could not fathom was Nyoor’s obsession with “up”. The filly would just rear, not out of frustration or pain, but purely just for the kicks of going on two hind legs. She did it in the paddock, grazing out of nowhere, then a calm rear, and back down with a shake and return grazing. Mina’s knowledge was that behaviours had a purpose, but for the life of her she could not figure out what the HELL Nyoor was trying to achieve with her rearing.

So in Canberra, Mina was expecting some level of theatrics. There were horses everywhere, people everywhere and goddamn hot air balloons everywhere. This horrifying beast suspending in the air with hot air, balloon boobs flying in the morning breeze. Nyoor had honestly been excellent, all things considered – she spent a few hours calling out and dancing around with her chest puffed and neck straight up. Eventually she settled into her hay net, pulling aggressively at the lucerne as Mina tidied a crushed braid.

In the ring, she was good – her jig-jog settled into a walk after a lap or so, and then – Up. First her head, then front legs – just a small rear. They continued at a walk, before showing off a trot but then – Up. Again. This time, Nyoor’s forelegs reached above Mina’s chest and her hind legs wheeled her around as Mina clung onto flapping reins for dear life. And down – like nothing happened. Fucking Nyoor.
