Description I basically spent the weekend colouring this drawing of the Amis de l'ABC , and I think I like the result. The shading on Feuilly's face looks a little odd, which is par for the course when I draw lots of characters - the first always ends up a little less... well, good than the next ones :-/

So, and because I really like these characters, from top to bottom/left to right, Feuilly (the only workman of the group), Combeferre (badass bookworm extraordinaire), Lesgles/Lègle/Laigle/L’Aigle de Meaux, known as Bossuet (sweet man, but really unlucky with a healthy sense of humour about it), Joly (most cheerful and loveable hypochondriac you’ll ever meet); Enjolras (statuesque warrior of the Republic), Jean (or Jehan) Prouvaire (sweet-natured poet you do not want to cross), and the three less reputable of the lot, Bahorel (a generous spirit and a first-class brawler given any flimsy excuse), Courfeyrac (a fop and a dandy with a heart larger than Europe) and Grantaire (an often drunken cynic who doesn’t care a bit for revolution but really likes hanging out with the rest of them).

(I know I already wrote all that, but a little repetition can't hurt - and I corrected a couple of mistakes )

Finally a drawing where these guys look like my mental picture of them! I love Courfeyrac's and Joly's expressions, and of course Enjolras <3 He looks young and revolutionary without seeming too girlish

Hahahahahaha Joly and his tongue-checking! They all look GREAT, though! I knew them all right away.

it must be the vest and the slightly unbuttoned shirt, but your Enjolras reminds me of Han Solo, which is funny, because, if anyone, Grantaire is the Han Solo of the group.

Okay, that's it, I'm adopting this Jehan. (Not in an intellectual-property-violation sort of way.) In my mind he has longer hair- but details, details. I love the color and gentle wave of his hair, and his face, and the bright colours.
I also love how your Enjolras' hair is straighter than I'm used to. He has that wild edge about him. And the sharp eyes and the angelic pallor.
Okay, these guys are all epic. I just wish Feuilly wouldn't smoke... but I like that he is a little tired-looking, still young but he has clearly been through so much (more than a few of them combined) and yet there is acceptance between him and Combeferre and Bossuet.
I would love to see more of these guys, and to figure out what colour Courfeyrac's eyes are.

I totally love this! You've captured each character's personality and have inspired me to try my hand at Les Amis de l'ABC render when I finish what I'm working on

Brava!

You're very welcome and that's so sweet of you to say.

I'll probably start on it after Christmas as I'm working on a One Day More inspired poster; still trying to sort out the Thernadiers but my cast is almost done I'm putting Ponnie up it a bit

Yes, that's exactly why I love him! He easily comes off as what we call "dans la lune" ("in the moon", day-dreaming, in his own world), he's such a sweet soul, but so fierce when it counts Thank you very much!

They all look amazing! Wonderful job. Jean Prouvaire looks like such a sweetheart (he's one of my favourites along with Courfeyrac). Thanks so much for drawing this!

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it, especially Prouvaire - he is such a sweetheart in the book, the design for him practically came by itself Thank you very much for your comment!

AresNergal In reply to The-French-Belphegor [2012-11-29 23:00:39 +0000 UTC]

I know that feel bro \o\

I second, a weekend well spend. I love that COurfeyrac's wearing light blue gloves!

The-French-Belphegor In reply to Starlene [2012-10-16 22:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot I started with the idea of white gloves for Courfeyrac, but it seemed a little too evening-wear (let's-go-to-the-opera-ish) and formal, so they ended up light blue. Still, this kind of little sartorial detail was fun to think up - like Bahorel's red jacket (mentioned in the "Corinthe" part), Enjolras' stark back-and-white, Jehan's pretty colours, Grantaire's more earthy tones, Combeferre's serious blue... I could go on for ages, but I won't

You think about all the details... When I created my versions of Les Amis, I just slapped some colours on them and called it a day. But great some, like you, have patience for details!
