Description A continuing attempt to learn how to use a tablet.

I've had this pic of Dakt's sticking in a folder for aaaaaages...trying to decide how I could ink it or something. Then when I got a tablet I went A-HA!!! So FINALLY I was able to have a go at purtying it up.

As I'm sure you can see...I'm still struggling with producing smooth lines. No matter how much I draw I just can't get those feckin' lines to be straighter. Dammit. I think I got RSI from hitting undo so much. I tried to do some kind of shading and all that but I couldn't find an approach that suited Dakt's style so I pussied out and just left it as flats.

No...I have no idea why Kid Flash is sitting there playing games or why Robin looks so worried. It is a mystery to me so I can't explain it.

Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god G, this is beyond adorable. Like, holy crap what the hell everything is just so alfknarhalgfkahtlafnkal <3
And dude, niiiiiiiiice inks! It looks friggin' amazing if you ask me, seriously.
Though, if you DO want to go for smoother lines... hm... I dunno. D: I mean, if you ever wanted to, you could dabble in vector layers. I never could find the patience for that, though~ xD Otherwise... you could just try zooming out more and making the strokes real fast? Have confidence! Strike! Slash! Undo!
...Messing with tablet settings could also help, too. :u

I've been interested in vector layers for awhile. I think they can look really cool. But I dunno...I don't think I'd have the patience for them either. And it would feel like having to learn a new method to produce something...and I don't really enjoy that.

I think someone else told me that too. That I should zoom out and draw the lines quicker and more confidently. I do take some time to just draw random lines...so maybe that will help build my confidence up and I won't have to zoom in and stress over every centimetre.

I love this!

I thought Robin looked worried, because he realized he was the shortest among the Teen Titans, despite being leader. That's got to hurt his ego.

Robin: How can they look up to me as leader?

Seriously, I adore this image. It's going right to my favorites.

So you saw it too?

Man...I'm starting to worry. Everyone else seemed to know why Robin looked worried except for me. Maybe I was focusing too much on what Wally was doing. But now that you say it...I can totally see why Robin looks worried. The way he's looking UP at the others.

I'm glad you like it so much.

Dude, I had SO MUCH GODDAMN TROUBLE learning how to do good lines with tablet. Actually, after almost a year of having it, I STILL haven't achieved the line thickness and quality I want. You haven't even had it very long, and you're doing so well! G + TABLET = BRILLIANCE Don't worry if it doesn't feel natural yet, it will soon.

Also, these guys~ they're ridiculously adorable. FFFF CHICKIE WITH THE WONDER WOMAN STUFFS ILU. Also, tiny and upset Robin ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff A-and, Kid Flash on the ground. And Archerguy. And just fffffffffff EVERYONE IS SO CUUUTE AND BRIGHT AND DESU

I guess that spending some time doing lines with a mouse gave me a bit of pre-training for using a pen. I guess I just expected MORE from myself. I thought that I'd be able to pick up a tablet and do what I normally do. And it hasn't worked out that way at all.

That's why I had to ink them. Their cuteness had to be shined up and given to the world!

You're doing great, though! My first drawings with a tablet . . . well, I'm STILL learning line thickness and stuffs. T: When I first started, I wasn't even sure I'd be able to draw with it well. It just takes a while to get used to, like anything else.

Yes! Hggg, I want to huggle them. <3

OMG! OMGOMGOMG! Is this Teen Titans: Year One fan art?
eeeee that thing was amazing!

Dude chillax. Your lines are fine. Your doing a better job with your tablet than I can manage (also you got a tablet? coolio)
and I mean... even if you didn't compare it to mine and you compared it to actually existing work your doing a great job. Tablets say they will make drawing easier but I find some of the working harder to do.
so reeeeelax dude!

I think it's a legacy thing isn't it? The Robin shortness.
All robin's must be dark haired, short and underage. as is the rules!

I'm not sure. I think she drew this before that series. But I had those comics in front of me when I was colouring it. I loved that series so much. I which they did another one.

Okay I'll try and relax. I think I had high expectations for the tablet. I expected that I'd plug it in and I'd be able to draw anything digitally. And when I couldn't I felt like I had failed at something or just wasn't good enough. It probably doesn't help looking at pictures done on a tablet by people who are freakishly talented. It's kinda hard to measure up to that level.

Exactly. But that seems to change depending on the artist. As soon as Tim became Red Robin he seemed to grow a couple of feet.

Karl Kerlashley is just one of my favorite artists. That one issue of FMA he did was my favorite by far and his work on Wednesday comics was just... gosh can not even say

Tablets are harder than they let on. It's like the expectation is 'once you get one you will become a master' and that's the feeling I got until... I failed. I still give it a go every once in a while but I like the feel of the pencil and paper better.... until I make a mistake and there is no undo button to use XDXDXD

I think Tim is wearing platforms. No-one notices because they are all too busy staring at his cowl and horrible costume.

The-G In reply to crazypenguin09 [2010-11-09 18:52:59 +0000 UTC]

It's a shame he doesn't do more comics. His pages are so beautiful to look at. Oh yeah! Wednesday Comics! There was so much awesome stuff in that. There was some stuff I didn't like but mostly it was all so so awesome.

That sounds like what I did. I plugged it in and started drawing like crazy, thinking I'd be able to do stuff a lot quicker but exactly the same. And then when I realised I couldn't I used it less and less until it's just an occasional thing now.

I was hoping that when Bruce came back he'd get rid of that costume...but I don't think he's going to. He seems to be intent on being Red Robin.

I've only seen the whole run of The Flash for Wednesday comics and a few scans from other stories. But I've heard it was a cool project.

Yeah it was like 'wow cool now I can draw like a PRO!.' but my dreams of taking the easy way where crushed....

Tim is the most idiotic smart person I have ever seen. True Facts. But... I like Damian and I think it would be good for him to be Robin so... I'm cool with that and if I think about it... I'm cool with Tim being Red Robin.
It just means we can continue making more jokes about him *snigger*

I loved the Supergirl story in there. It was about Streaky and Krypto running around causing mischief. Streaky chased after a plane! And it was cool reading them as a newspaper thing.

I'm thinking maybe getting one of those monitors you draw on would be much better. They had some set up at Supanova and they were a lot easier.

It is true. He's constantly getting himself into trouble. He can swing around and beat up bad guys...but when he's just being Tim he can't do anything right. I loved it when some people made fun of his Red Robin costume. He stopped some criminals in Gotham and the cops who arrived thought he was Dr. Midnite.

That way by Amanda Conner right? I've heard great things abut her.

I'm thinking of just practice, practice, practice. I know that artists need good tools but I need to build skills before I worry about that XDXDXD

The set ups supanova had was really awesome! I didn't use it much but what I saw was amazing. It's really a matter of finding what works for you, as is everything. It's just a VERY complicated and hard process which is annoying (at least for me). It takes sooooo looooong!

I love this one panel I found and it was like something about Dr. Midnight coming to Gotham and 'I think I could take him.'
Most hilarious thing Y/Y?

The-G In reply to crazypenguin09 [2010-12-02 00:04:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's the one. She has a lot of humour in her art. That must be why she sticks to funny type stories. It suits her.

Some people use expensive tools to cover up the fact they don't have any skills. So practicing just the basics is the best way to go. And finding what works for you is the best thing to do too. For awhile there I thought I HAD to do everything digitally because so many other people do. But then I figured that if pencil and paper works best for me then I should just stick to that.

I remember that I was walking towards the tablet booth to show my friend the spiffy ones that you draw on...and I looked to my right and Joe Kubert was sitting in his booth. He was like two feet away from me! I've never been so close to comic book legend before.

What was that from?

crazypenguin09 In reply to The-G [2010-12-02 10:52:22 +0000 UTC]

It's good to find your niche and stick to it. It would be rather hard to try other things when you find something that suits you REALLY well. But it's also good to experiment in other areas.

SAME MAN! It's like... everyone was doing these really good digital drawings and I thought to myself 'maybe it's easier or something.' But I discovered.. no. It wasn't XDXD

Duuude! That is just TOO awesome!

It's from an issue of Red Robin. One of the earlier ones I think (For some reason I think it's #12 but I can't be sure) (and it's probably not #12)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to crazypenguin09 [2010-12-10 08:30:30 +0000 UTC]

It probably helps influence you. Because if there's a certain thing you know you're good at then you will probably want to draw that more...because you know it will turn out okay. If it's something you're not comfortable with then there will be all the unknowns of if you can do it.

No. No it isn't. It's the big art lie!

I know that one. You're right it was one of the early ones. It was when he first came back to Gotham. So #12 or maybe a couple issues before. Can't remember.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crazypenguin09 In reply to The-G [2010-12-12 08:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It's comfortable. And you know there is a better chance of it looking good if you work in your style.

It's sort of sad that it's such a popular thought. I mean so many people think that CGI and digital stuff is MUCH easier and don't appreciate how hard it is. It means that the effort the people put in is not as appreciated.

Yes you are right. I only vaguely remember it because I didn't read Red Robin back then.

It's really hard to get good lines with a tablet unless you're using pen pressure. But I learned recently how to use the pen tool simulating pen pressure, and it's been soooo helpful.
For just starting out with a tablet, this is really, really well done. The coloring is crisp, the lines aren't terrible (they're quite good, actually), and all in all I'm very impressed. You can only get better from here!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to Chanceless [2010-11-04 05:11:02 +0000 UTC]

Wait wait wait.

You mean all those pictures you've done in the past haven't been down with pen pressure? Are you kidding me? That's insane! How did you....what was............but the................... You are even more skilled than I previously thought.

Coming from my tablet hero...that's quite a huge compliment. I shall commit myself to practicing and getting better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chanceless In reply to The-G [2010-11-09 01:07:16 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no. I didn't have pen pressure on my tablet because of some way that my computer was configured when I first got it. It was very frustrating.

And before I got my tablet, I would attempt inking and coloring everything with a mouse without any additional tools, and that was definitely fun.

But there's the actual pen tool on photoshop that's super helpful with making very smooth, crisp lines. None of my work in this gallery utilizes the pen tool except for [link]

When I move again to a place where I have my own room and my own space, I'll be able to set up my computer and do more work with my tablet to keep advancing my technique.

I've been using the pen tool a lot with my laptop in the meantime. Once you learn how to use the pen tool, lineart becomes a loooot easier.

Xandi5anders In reply to The-G [2010-11-04 19:05:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm surprised she comes off that way. I know she's busy and prestigious, but she's not like a snotty artist who thinks she's above others. She's just a crazy loon like the rest of us. The only reason she wouldn't answer them is because the university eats her soul, not because she didn't want to. As long as they're not jackwagons about stuff, I don't think she minds.

I feel like I should watch people that are close to you and Dakt. Like I've finally added Pam and we're a lot alike so that's fun. I feel like I should add Liss, too.

The-G In reply to Xandi5anders [2010-11-07 16:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't think it's because she radiates an air of arrogance or anything. I think it's probably more to due with the fact that her art probably intimidates people. They see her art and love it so much that they feel too scared to talk to the person who produced it. I know. I do that. There are people on here who I worship but I've never sent them one comment...because I'm too scared to. It's kinda cute though. I remember that Dakt was doing one of her free sketch things and she agreed to do someone's...and then they came and told me about it and they were all about it.

Hmmm...while I would say by all means watch Liss and her awesome...it's not like she's around on dA much anymore. I think she's only been on once this year.

Haha. You appeal to the old-school nerds. That's not a bad thing. It's classic, man.

Sad that it works out that way. Just construct messages in which you say "I would yell at you and tell you to come back to DA but I know you wouldn't see it because you're never on and you've been missing for months!" See, I have yours and Dakt's facebooks to bother you two if you're gone here too long.

Well I only really cover the basics of nerdity so I guess the old school nerds can appreciate that.

But that's the problem. You build up a comment that you think makes good points and arguments about their absence and will surely make them be around more...but then you realise if they're never actually around to read it how can you reach them? Liss has a Facebook too but I think she uses that about as much as she uses dA.
