Description I've received a lot of helpful feedback on the design of the pirate airship Turnabout ( [link] ), and one of the recurring topics of discussion has been "How do boarding actions occur?"

The top scenario ("Normandy") is what I originally had in mind, but isn't without its drawbacks. Here are some other thoughts I was playing around with as well.

Also, I'm currently leaning away from propellers and fans and towards maneuvering jets which use the same orichalcum gas that keeps the airship bouyant. This provides a nice tie-in to the fictional "technology" I've already got in place, and also provides a good reason why a ship would primarily use sails-- bleed off too much, and you fall from the sky!

One of the advantages of a design like the squid or the mantis is that when not in use to capture anther ship Sails could be rigged between the arms. This would help hide their true purpose always a plus for a pirate.

I think that electromagnetic grapples, fired from air cannons, could reel another ship in, and then they could just cut through the envelope.

Why are the airships all enclosed? Most airships I've seen are traditional ships hanging under traditional blimps. Or did I just answer my own question?

They're enclosed primarily because my starting point was the Graf Zeppelin. And really, for anything going to a higher altitude than a thousand feet or so, I imagine "enclosed" would be the way to go. It gets cold up there!

Thanks! It certainly does give the immediate impression that this isn't a ship you want following you.

2 grabbers at the front and 2 at the back and it pulls the ship into a gap inside the center to lock it in place and boarding ramps extend from either sides and drill into the ships hull and then enter

So it straddles the target ship, perpendicularly?

The ships are turned sideways to each other, like the "Mantis" model, with the pirate ship on top.

I mean the pirate ship is above and there is a large gap/docking bay like area in the center at the lower half of the pirate ship where the other ship is dragged into with 4 large claws

Sounds like a cross between the Spider and a Star Destroyer.
