Powers & Weapons:
- Spiked Carapace: Anguirus' body is protected by a carapace covered in hundreds of spikes.
- Back Thrust: When needed, Anguirus can launch himself back-first at an opponent, driving his many spikes into an opponent’s body.

Biography: 1955 saw not only the second Godzilla mutation, but also the discovery of a prehistoric monstrosity. An Anguilasaurus, better known simply as Anguirus, was spotted on a remote island in battle with the next Godzilla. The two beasts fought on before vanishing into the depths. Just a few days later, they met again in the city of Osaka. The warring titans devastated the city, but Godzilla managed to rip out the spiked saurian’s throat and cast his body into a sea of atomic fire. The living fossil, Anguirus, was defeated and sent back to the extinction list…

Until 1969, that is.

A second Anguirus was spotted on the same island chain as the first. Before it could cause any damage, the monster was wrangled up by self-defense forces and moved to the secure Monster Island. The beast was a ravenous killer, much like the former. However, after having numerous battles with the island’s denizens, especially Godzilla, something began to change. Much like Godzilla’s increase in intelligence, Anguirus also began to become smarter! By 1972, Anguirus and Godzilla had retired their rivalry and became partners! Together, they thwarted the Nebulan invasion and sent Gigan and King Ghidorah fleeing back into space. In 1973, atomic bomb tests near the island ruined it and Anguirus burrowed to safety. He was lost for nearly a year before emerging from the ground in Japan to confront the Godzilla-disguised MechaGodzilla.

The brave quadruped was rewarded with a busted, bloody jaw for his trouble. However, his mission was a success. He had alarmed his friend of this invasion. Without the regeneration of that of Godzilla, it took Anguirus nearly a decade to recover fully. When Monsterland was established in the 1990’s, the spiked saurian was once again rounded up and taken to a new island paradise to live out the rest of his days in peace.

Eyes of the Earth

From the journal of Dr. Otani,

Anguirus may be the second most intriguing kaiju of our project, surpassed only by Godzilla himself. I have watched countless hours’ worth of footage of the dinosaur… I personally refuse to call this beast a monster… and can’t believe that the one we have is the same as the one in 1969. I watched this predator viciously hunt down entire herds of cattle and gulp them down in a mere minute. I watched this dinosaur tear through Kamacuras and leave nothing but bloody smears on the dirt…

And now Anguirus is only a few steps away from human intelligence, if even. Sometimes I have my thoughts that he can speak, especially judging on footage captured by Monster Island personal in 1972 mere days before the battle against Gigan and King Ghidorah. If I didn’t know better, I swear it looked like Godzilla was giving him orders!

After much studying, I have discovered that, of all kaiju on Monster Island at the time, Anguirus had the most exposure to Godzilla during his increase in intelligence. It is a well-known fact that Godzilla’s intelligence is owed to the radiation in his brain unlocking unused sections. It is my theory that Anguirus’ exposure to Godzilla’s radiation, especially taking numerous blasts of his beam to the head and face, has caused a unique mutation in Anguirus’ brain, thus allowing him to rapidly learn and become far more intelligent. Be it I’m right or wrong, nobody else has offered any better an explanation for Anguirus’ sudden intelligence in the 1970’s.

Eyes of the Kilaakians

He can walk, swim, and burrow. What a creature! This monster, Anguirus, is extremely fascinating. These humans have a saying “there’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity” and, if that is true, the beast walks that line perfectly everyday. Reports from Nebulans say that the monster blindly rushed Gigan’s buzzsaw without a second thought to try and help Godzilla. That is admirable, extremely admirable. It is this reason that I have decided to utilize Anguirus as a guard for our Brazil base when it is in operation.

In the mean time, Anguirus will be unleashed upon Hong Kong! I want no structures standing by dawn!

Pretty neat. I see your starting to really use line variation to make thing pop a bit more. Textures are interesting and give this nice gritty feel. Love the lightning. Looks a bit more real than most lighting I see people try. And that would include my dorky little attempts at it.

Heh, nice reversal of "He's taken one too many shots to the head." Very interesting reason for his boost in smarts.

Mmmm, I love that the Kilaaks like his protective, fearless defence of his friends attitude, but humans protecting their home is cause for war. Misunderstandings are fun!

I think out of all the "redesigns" for Anguirus, this has to be my favorite. I would so watch a movie centered on him if he had this kind of history and past

Pretty cool take on his intellect! It's funny, Godzilla's radiation really isn't mentioned much after the early Showa films, and even then it was just a way to find him, or an impact on the environment. Toho never explored the idea of "what happens to other monsters when they're exposed to Godzilla?". Seems like a missed opportunity!

And I do indeed see you took my advice. I think it shows, tbh- the environment looks MUCH better here. I don't remember if I advised blurring objects that are in the background or not, but the fact that you did it here helps create the atmosphere. This feels much more three dimensional than your Sanda piece and is all around more pleasing to the eye. Good work!

Classic Anguirus AND a unique take on his personality. Since Godzilla's particular radiation caused his growth in the first place, it stands to reason it might have similar effects in other monsters and thus gives some in setting credence to the two showing that depth of intelligence they did in the later Showa films.

Yeah. I sort of wish they would have expanded on Showa Godzilla's radiation, or Godzilla in general

A good take on angirus. Especially since you choose to give him a spiked tail (which in a way reminds me of a baseball bat with nails in it.).

Backstory wise all i can say is an intriguing approach. Not many have shown angirus' loyalty...and foolhardiness. So interesting take.

Thank you. I wanted to base entirely on Showa Ang. No look at GFW Ang all.

Your art excels, MM. Never getting enough of these backgrounds and new monster looks.

I like much of Anguruis's backstory. The fact there is more then one of many monsters is growing on me all the more.
