Description Found this thistle, almost as tall as I am (which isn't very tall for a person, but as thistles go...) underneath the Blue Ridge Parkway, where it crosses the Roanoke River over a (very high) road bridge.

Catching this shot was not easy; open shade, slow film (Ilford Pan F+) and an orange filter made for a long shutter time, and every single breath of wind, butterfly wing flap and distant gnat fart was enough to send it swaying wildly in and out of frame. I got lucky, with a little forward planning.

Scanned from a darkroom print.

Beautiful image. (The tallest thistle I've ever found was about 7ft tall)

yup - I photographed it from underneath but there was nothing to put it into perspective to give it a sense of scale.

Beautifully done - nice to see well made paper prints!
And I love the fine Pan-F grain - 50 ASA ?(back then, before ISO took over?)
Nice 'rhythm' with the seed heads in their various positions.

Thanks! Pan F is lovely stuff, yes box speed ISO 50 still, and takes a bit more thoughtful exposure than HP5+ or Tri-X but is so worth it. I just picked some up in 120 but haven't shot it yet, looking forward to the results after seeing how nice it is in 35mm.

Those big negs with that fine grain, nail the exposure and you should have some really good looking shots. Very classic process that.

I think they'll look amazing. If only I had room to print bigger than 11x14 (one day...one day...)

Mmm - I remember turning the enlarger head through 90o, and projecting onto the wall. Even rotating it 180o and having the paper on the floor. It's the trays - those huge prints had to be rolled through the dev & fix, and I never got them properly fixed. I should have washed them in a big bath, but in those circumstances, wasn't going to happen.

There's a thought - one could use, say 12" PVC piping to make trays to roll the prints through, or develop them loosely rolled on a coil like one does film ...

One day, indeed. I haven't had a darkroom for decades. (Still got the kit ...)

Yeah the trays are the issue for me also. My enlarger will do well past 16*20 without fuss, but I just about have room for the 11*14 trays. I could perhaps rearrange things to make them fit. Maybe. We'll be moving in July anyway, so it isn't an urgent thing just now.

Moving is its own mission - good luck!
